The University of Colorado at Boulder has joined a consortium of five major universities that are conducting research using a 3.5-meter telescope at Apache Point Observatory, located northeast of Las Cruces, N.M. The Astrophysical Research Consortium, or ARC, consists of Princeton University, the University of Chicago, the University of Washington, Johns Hopkins University, New Mexico State University and CU-Boulder.

The Housing department at the University of Colorado at Boulder will hold its 11th annual Global Jam smorgasbord of culturally diverse foods on Thursday, Sept. 13, from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Farrand Field. "This special event is an opportunity for the CU community to celebrate other cultures through ethnic entertainment and cuisine," said Steve Weaver, CU-Boulder residence hall director. "Learning about and finding joy in our differences is a unique opportunity and journey for our community. Our hope is that Global Jam will be a part of this journey."

Jan Whitt, associate professor of the School of Journalism and Mass Communication and Mark W. Williams, associate professor of the department of geography, the Institute of Arctic and Alpine Research and the environmental studies program, have been appointed as faculty co-directors for the Undergraduate Academy at the University of Colorado at Boulder. The appointments were announced by Michael Grant, associate vice chancellor for undergraduate education and are subject to approval by Chancellor Richard Byyny.

More than 4,000 parents and families of CU-Boulder students are expected to attend the annual Fall Parents Weekend a month earlier than usual, Sept. 21-23, due to this year's football schedule. The event draws parents from around the United States and from several foreign countries. Parents and families can register to attend over the Internet, which accounted for approximately half of all registrations last year, according to Peter Simons, director of parent relations.

The department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations at the University of Colorado at Boulder is the recipient of the Japanese Foreign Minister's Commendation and two new grants from the Freeman Foundation.

Calendar Item Fiske Planetarium at the University of Colorado at Boulder will tour the seven wonders of the ancient world during "Seven Wonders" on Friday, Sept. 14, at 7:30 p.m. at the planetarium. Burt Lancaster will guide the pre-recorded tour in a search for the seven wonders of the solar system and the universe. Tickets go on sale at 7 p.m. the night of the show and are $4 for adults and $3 for seniors and children. Fiske Planetarium is located at Regent Drive and Kittredge Loop Drive on the CU-Boulder campus.

Alcohol offenses by students at CU-Boulder will continue to have potentially serious and expensive consequences this fall. University officials have been reminding students, via posters, bus signs, email bulletins and letters to parents, that the university's "3 Strikes" policy for alcohol and drug-abuse offenses will continue for the 2001-2002 school year and for the foreseeable future.

Fiske Planetarium at the University of Colorado at Boulder will present "Colorado Skies," a live show featuring some of the stellar sights seen in the night sky in Colorado, will be presented Friday, Sept. 7, and Tuesday, Sept. 11, at 7:30 p.m. The show kicks off Fiske Planetarium's fall 2001 schedule of live monthly astronomy talks about everything from supernovae to American Indian celestial beliefs. Visitors also will see images of deep space objects and view new satellite photos. The show includes an open question period for visitors.

One of the nation's leading criminologists and most-cited experts on the death penalty, Michael Radelet, has joined the sociology department at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Radelet comes to CU-Boulder from the University of Florida, where he taught for more than 20 years and served as chair of the sociology department for the last five years. He has researched and published extensively on how the death penalty is applied in the United States.

The University of Colorado at Boulder's Graduate School will present a symposium titled "Thinking Alternatives: Research and Cognitive Disabilities" at 7 p.m. Aug. 30 in the University Memorial Center's Glenn Miller Ballroom.
