The University of Colorado at Boulder will hold a public meeting on the Williams Village student housing expansion project on Oct. 4 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Stearns Central, room 178, at the Williams Village complex. According to Derrick Watson, project coordinator for the department of Housing, the purpose of the meeting is to provide residents with an update on the status of the project, including master site planning sketches, preliminary design guidelines and the development schedule.

The Cultural Unity Center at the University of Colorado at Boulder has been awarded the United States Hispanic Leadership Institute's Collegiate Leadership Award. The award will be presented at the institute's annual conference in Chicago on Sept. 28. Approximately 1,500 present and future leaders are expected to attend.

Several top University of Colorado at Boulder science professors will once again bring the fascinating world of science to young minds as the 2001-2002 CU Wizards program kicks off on Saturday, Sept. 29. The season opens with CU-Boulder chemistry and biochemistry Professor David Nesbitt's "Chemistry in the Kitchen." The free hour-long show will begin at 9:30 a.m. in Cristol Chemistry and Biochemistry room 140. During the show Nesbitt will explore several topics including fermentation, how high altitude affects cooking and how cheese and ice cream are made.

Seeking to promote unity in a time of tragedy, the University of Colorado at Boulder's Undergraduate Academy will sponsor a unity and remembrance walk at noon on Tuesday, Sept. 25, to mark the two-week anniversary of the terrorist attacks on America. The event will convene with a brief program on the steps of Norlin Library on the CU-Boulder quadrangle. Participants will then make a short loop through campus, taking about an hour to complete the walk.

Professor Susan Kent of the history and women's studies departments has been named interim associate vice chancellor for faculty affairs at the University of Colorado at Boulder. The appointment was announced by Provost Phil DiStefano and is pending approval by Chancellor Richard Byyny. Kent replaces Todd Gleeson, who was recently named interim dean of CU-Boulder's College of Arts and Sciences.

More than a dozen University of Colorado at Boulder faculty members will participate in a "Teach-in on the International Crisis" on Monday, Sept. 24, to discuss the recent terrorist attacks in New York and Washington D.C. The teach-in will be held from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. in the University Memorial Center's Forum Room on the CU-Boulder campus, and is free and open to the public.

The University of Colorado at Boulder's official fall 2001 enrollment counts include fewer freshmen than in fall 2000, but more students overall. CU-Boulder planned to reduce freshmen this fall and this year's final census total of 4,982 is very close to the target of 4,950 set in December 2000. Last fall there were 5,095 freshmen. The fall 2001 total is lower by 113 students or 2 percent.

The National Science Foundation today named physics Professor Carl E. Wieman of the University of Colorado at Boulder one of seven scientists and engineers in the United States to receive the first Director's Awards for Distinguished Teaching Scholars. The award is NSF's "highest honor for excellence in both teaching and research." Each recipient will receive $300,000 over the next four years to continue sharing their teaching talents and research excellence with students at all levels and with the public at large.

The University of Colorado at Boulder will host a campus forum on "Being an Ally: Breaking Down Stereotypes" on Thursday, Sept. 20, at 7:30 p.m. in Eaton Humanities Building room B150. According to organizers, the purpose of the forum is to provide an opportunity for students, staff and faculty to discuss the events of the last week and to identify ways that the community can support campus members who have been affected by negative stereotyping and acts of recrimination.
