The Council of Ministers of Galicia, Spain, has awarded CU-Boulder Professor Luis González-del-Valle the Silver Medal of Galicia. González-del-Valle was recognized for his efforts in the field of Hispanic Studies in the United States and for his extensive research on the Galician writer Ramón del-Valle-Inclán. The prime minister of Galicia presented González-del-Valle with the Silver Medal on July 26 during the festival of St. James, the patron saint of Spain.

Nationally syndicated columnist Barbara Feldman has awarded five stars this week to "The Glacier Story," a Web site created by the communications group at the University of Colorado at BoulderÂ’s National Snow and Ice Data Center. FeldmanÂ’s weekly column, "Surfing the Net with Kids," is distributed internationally by the Los Angeles Times Syndicate and devoted to "WhatÂ’s wonderful on the Net" for family entertainment and education. Dan Raybon, director of the Cultural Unity Center, will retire Aug. 31 after 26 years of service at the University of Colorado at Boulder, according to Ron Stump, vice chancellor for student affairs. Raybon and his spouse, Professor Patricia Raybon of CU-BoulderÂ’s School of Journalism and Mass Communication, will be working on their consulting venture, Christian Diversity Concepts, Inc., specializing in diversity education and training. Professor Raybon is taking a one-year leave of absence from the university.

The University of Colorado Police Department will give away free pizza to students during "Hill Stops" on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 25-26, from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. unless the food runs out before 11 p.m. Officers will give away pizza and lemonade to students who stop and visit. Â鶹ÒùÔº should look for CU officers on the campus side of the Hill underpass at Broadway and College Avenue.

Â鶹ÒùÔº attending the University of Colorado at Boulder who have been fighting fires in Western states this summer will be able to arrive late for classes but they are encouraged to notify the registrar's office of their delayed arrival. These students, or a family member, should contact the registrar's office as soon as possible to hold their fall semester classes. The number to call is (303) 492-6970.

The University of Colorado's ban on beer sales at Folsom Field will remain in effect for the 2001 football season, which kicks off with a 6 p.m. contest Sunday, Aug. 26, versus the Fresno State Bulldogs. Instituted as a two-year trial program in 1996, the ban was extended indefinitely in 1998. That decision was supported by community leaders and by local and campus law enforcement officials.

Construction work on the new Discovery Learning Center east of the CU-Boulder Engineering Center may cause traffic delays on Regent Drive during student move-in Aug. 22-23. The far right southbound lane just east of the Engineering Center will be closed while construction crews dig out the foundation area for the new building. The lane is expected to reopen by the time classes start Aug. 28. "Due to the construction along Regent Drive, there may be some traffic delays during the next week," said Jim Fadenrecht, the CU Police director of public safety.

New students entering the University of Colorado at Boulder will be welcomed by students, staff and faculty from the Building Community Campaign at the Fall 2000 Convocation on Thursday, Aug. 24, at 5:30 p.m. on the Norlin Quadrangle. University of Colorado Student Union tri-executive John Moore will ask the students to pledge their commitment to making the Boulder campus a better place to live, work and learn.

College freshmen are choosing the University of Colorado at Boulder in record numbers this fall to take advantage of strong academic programs and the quality of student life. The fall 2000 freshman class will have about 600 more students than last yearÂ’s freshman class of 4,560. The class will include more than 2,800 students from Colorado. Overall enrollment for degree-seeking students will be approximately 26,000. Final enrollment numbers will not be available until the close of the drop-add period, sometime the week of Sept. 18.
