Montrose will host an exhibit of Southwestern archaeology as part of the CU This Summer cultural outreach program from the University of Colorado at Boulder. The exhibit, “Exploring Yellow Jacket: The Anasazi Site that Continues to Grow,” will be from June 24 through Sept. 1 at the Montrose Pavilion, CU This Summer’s local sponsor. Hours are weekdays from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Admission is free.

Grand Junction will host an exhibit of early Southwestern weaving as part of the CU This Summer cultural outreach program of the University of Colorado at Boulder. The exhibit, “Beyond the Loom: Keys to Understanding Early Southwestern Textiles,” will be shown from May 24 through Sept. 1 at the Museum of Western Colorado, the CU This Summer local sponsor. The large color photographs in the exhibit are accompanied by text and graphics showing the early history and methods of weaving by native people of the Southwest.

The University of Colorado at Boulder will host National History Day in Colorado May 3 for students in sixth through 12th grades in schools across the state. Judging for the seven categories of competition will begin at 9 a.m. in Hellems Arts and Sciences Building, the Education Building and the University Memorial Center.

Ceremonies honoring seven winners of the University of Colorado at Boulder Alumni AssociationÂ’s 67th annual awards will be held May 15 in Old Main Chapel on campus. The George Norlin Award to distinguished alumni for lifetime achievement and devotion to the betterment of society will be presented to Les Fowler of Boulder and Alfred Harrell of Denver. Fowler, a 1948 business graduate, was honored for his contribution to higher education while serving more than two decades in the Colorado Legislature and for volunteering his skills as a CU golf coach.

An international research team has discovered the key protein in an enzyme responsible for lengthening the ends of chromosomes, a surprising finding that potentially could lead to the development of new ways to detect and treat cancer.

Campus Closure The University of Colorado at Boulder will close at noon today, Thursday, April 24, except for essential services and the engineering college lab dedication, which will proceed as scheduled, according to Interim Chancellor Richard Byyny. Because essential services will be maintained, employees should check with their supervisors or department heads for instructions. Also, the dedication of the Intergrated Teaching and Learning Laboratory, scheduled for this afternoon, will proceed as planned, university officials said.

Ten Colorado communities will host the University of Colorado at BoulderÂ’s outreach program, CU This Summer, providing art and museum exhibits, dance and music performances throughout the state. According to estimates, more than 300,000 individuals have attended CU This Summer events in the nine years the popular community outreach program has traveled around the state.

CU-Boulder undergraduates will present research findings in the fields of psychology, biology and kinesiology on April 30 from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in the Glenn Miller Ballroom of the University Memorial Center. About 20 students will offer poster displays explaining their research results and will be available to answer questions. Topics include the effects of anxiety on memory and the effects of underwater running on running performance. CU-Boulder students and the general public are invited to attend.

The College of Business and Administration at the University of Colorado at Boulder has honored Robert F. (Bob) Charles with the 1997 Dean’s Award for Entrepreneurial Excellence. Charles, who moved to Boulder in 1965 with his wife, Judy, managed Boulder’s original McDonald’s on 28th Street. By 1969 he owned that store and had opened another on Baseline. In the early 1990s, Charles operated 11 franchises and was heralded as the Burger Baron of Boulder County. He presently owns three stores – two in Arvada and one in Westminster.

There's more to using a rebate than merely saving a few cents, a new study of shoppers reports. People who are willing to spend extra time and effort sending in a rebate will tend to believe the product they are getting is pretty swell, says Donald Lichtenstein, a marketing professor at the University of Colorado at Boulder. But when shoppers respond to advertised sales, they are less likely to attribute high quality to the brand. Why?
