The University of Colorado at BoulderÂ’s Hawaiian student organization, Hui O Mau Hoaaloha, will hold itÂ’s seventh annual luÂ’au on April 26 in the Glenn Miller Ballroom on the CU-Boulder campus. Doors open at 5 p.m. Dinner will be served from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. and a Polynesian revue consisting of Tahitian, Maori, Samoan and Hawaiian dancing will be held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. There will also be special guest performances by Hawaiian singer Palani Vaughan and Miss Aloha Hula, Hewa Vaughan.

Spending a little more time and effort on grocery shopping can mean big savings to your food budget, a University of Colorado at Boulder marketing professor says. Donald Lichtenstein has studied marketing techniques and consumer behavior in all types of stores for 15 years. From the front of a store to the back, he has suggestions on techniques shoppers can use to get more value for their money. "I love a deal," says Lichtenstein. "When that blue light goes off something in my blood just starts percolating."

Five finalists for the position of director of the University Memorial Center at the University of Colorado at Boulder will begin campus visits April 23. Members of the campus community are encouraged to attend the candidatesÂ’ open forums and offer feedback to the search committee co-chaired by Gary Chadwick, director of the Recreation Center, and Adam Fingersh, representative-at-large of the University of Colorado Student Union. The finalists, their current positions and dates of campus visits are:

Four faculty members at the University of Colorado at Boulder will be the first to receive the newly established Big 12 Faculty Fellowships to work in their areas of expertise at another Big 12 school of their choice. The recipients were announced by Wallace Loh, vice chancellor for academic affairs, who first announced the fellowships last December. The fellowships were established, Loh said, “by the chief academic officers of the Big 12 who believe our member schools should be more than an athletic conference -- we should also be connected by academic endeavors.”

The following statement was issued this morning by University of Colorado President John C. Buechner. “First of all, I want to say I am very satisfied with the thorough planning and organization undertaken by the Boulder campus community for the visit of chancellor candidate Dr. John Moseley. Over the last three days, constituent groups from every sector of the campus community have had the opportunity to meet with Dr. Moseley at length, and I am told that these meetings have been productive and informative.

Recent satellite images collected by the University of Colorado at Boulder-based National Snow and Ice Data Center indicate a section of a large ice shelf on the Antarctic Peninsula has broken away.

The top business plans of aspiring student entrepreneurs at the University of Colorado at Boulder will be judged by a panel of local executives April 30 in the spring Business Plan Competition. The spring semester event is the climax of a class taught by Juan Rodriguez, professor of electrical and computer engineering and chairman of Ecrix Corp., and instructor Mike Befeler, a principal and founder of Storage Systems Marketing Inc. Rodriguez is a co-founder of both Storage Technology Corp. and Exabyte Corp.

The unique partnership involving industry and foundations in CU-Boulder’s new $17 million Integrated Teaching and Learning Laboratory may be a harbinger of similar collaborations around the nation, according to engineering Dean Ross Corotis. “Industry has not traditionally been involved in the educational process of engineers,” said Corotis. “But I think the overwhelming support we have received on this project is a signal the private sector is acknowledging their stake in the quality of engineering education.”

Michael Haines, a national expert on campus substance abuse, will participate in several panels and presentations on the CU-Boulder campus, Friday, April 18. His visit is co-sponsored by CU-Boulder’s “A Matter of Degree” Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Grant, the Kappa Alpha Order fraternity and the Alcohol Education Committee of the campus Housing Department. Haines is coordinator of the Health Enhancement Services at Northern Illinois University. He is noted for his research showing that moderate alcohol consumption is the standard for many college students.

The University of Colorado has terminated a lease agreement with the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity for a house at 1505 University Ave., due to numerous lease violations by the group. The building was offered by the university as temporary housing for the fraternity after the membersÂ’ permanent house burned in September 1996. Original plans called for the fraternity to move out of the temporary quarters in January 1997, when the university was scheduled to begin renovating the space for its Continuing Education program.
