For the first time in two years, the art gallery at the renovated University Memorial Center on the University of Colorado at Boulder campus will host a new public exhibit starting Nov. 1. "Return to the Free Zone," a show organized by chemistry doctoral student and artist Tanya Plotnick Vega, will debut from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., along with a free catered reception and live music. The gallery is located next to the UMC's second floor reception desk. Both graduate and undergraduate artists will contribute multimedia works for the five-week exhibit.

The University of Colorado at Boulder, Lockheed Martin Space Systems and NEWS4 have teamed up to present an exciting, week-long educational science program for third, fourth and fifth grade students on the topic of space called "Cosmos 4 KIDS." Together with NEWS4 Weathercaster and Anchor Larry Green, space scientists and engineers from Lockheed Martin and CU-Boulder will explore space, from the big-bang theory to the future of space exploration.

Orfalea will speak to classes Oct. 23 at 3:30 p.m. in room 224 of the Leeds School and from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. in room 244. Kinko's founder Paul Orfalea will speak to students at the CU-Boulder Leeds School of Business Oct. 23 on his unique perspective on inspiring co-workers and leading an international organization.

CU-Boulder marketing professor Dipankar Chakravarti has been elected a fellow of the Society for Consumer Psychology, the second for the Leeds School of Business marketing faculty. "This is a great and well-deserved honor and brings important recognition to the Leeds School of Business and the University of Colorado," said Dean Steven Manaster. "What is particularly noteworthy about Professor Chakravarti is that while this award recognizes his contributions and stature in the field of consumer behavior, he also is a noted expert in marketing strategy and marketing models."

The more time that passes since Sept. 11, the less likely the public will be supportive of military actions like an attack on Iraq, according to University of Colorado at Boulder researchers. CU-Boulder researchers from the psychology and political science departments conducted three separate experiments exploring individuals' responses to reported terrorist attacks against the United States. In each experiment they found people responded with an increasing level of conflict to terrorist acts when they were repeated -- rather than just a single act.

The CU-Boulder Deming Center for Entrepreneurship appointed four new members to its advisory board. The accomplished business leaders are Arthur Dawson, Gretchen Jahn, Larry Jones and David P. Torres Jr.

New York Times science reporter Andrew Revkin will deliver a talk titled "The Daily Planet: Why the Media Stumble Over the Environment" on Thursday, Oct. 17, at 2 p.m. in the auditorium of the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences on the CU-Boulder campus. The auditorium is located in room 338 of the CIRES building. The talk is free and open to the public and is presented as part of the Distinguished Lecture Series sponsored by CIRES.

"Accessing Higher Ground," the fifth annual conference on Assistive Technology and Accessible Media in Higher Education, will be held at the CU-Boulder University Memorial Center Nov. 6-8. Program coordinators at the CU-Boulder AT Lab and Disability Services are bringing together national leaders in the field of assistive technology and media to educate students, staff, faculty and community members on the availability and potential benefits of assistive technology in education.

Volunteers and donations from the University of Colorado at Boulder campus community are being sought for the 12th annual Make a Difference Day on Oct. 26. Make a Difference Day is the largest national day of doing good, and is sponsored by USA Weekend magazine and its nearly 600 carrier newspapers in partnership with the Points of Light Foundation.

The Chancellor's Leadership Residential Academic Program at the University of Colorado at Boulder has seen an increase in participating minority students from eight in 1999, its first year, to 50 students this fall. Interim Director Carol Miyagishima credits the increase in diversity to the Ethnic Living and Learning Community, which began last year and is closely tied to the Chancellor's Leadership program. The number of students participating in ELLC increased from 20 students in fall 2001 to 52 students this year.
