CU Researcher To Discuss Bering Land Bridge March 12

University of Colorado at Boulder scientist Scott Elias will give a lecture at the CU Cortez Center March 12 on the ancient environments of the Bering Land Bridge and early human migrations into the New World. The talk is the second in a series of monthly lectures at the CU Cortez Center by CU-Boulder faculty running from February through May. Co-sponsored by CU President John Buechner and the CU-Boulder Office of Community Relations, the free public talks are held at 7:30 p.m. at 25 N. Market St. in Cortez.

CU Offers Fairview Â鶹ÒùÔº Help With Writing Via Internet

When seniors at Boulder's Fairview High School want feedback on their writing, they can get it via the Internet from students, faculty and staff at the University of Colorado or from local business professionals. A pilot program launched in fall 1998 with 20 students is planned to expand to 100 high school students this semester, said Fairview English teacher Randy Rothberg.

CU-Boulder Chemistry Professor Wins Teaching Fellowship

The University of Colorado at Boulder Sewall Residential Academic Program has selected professor Margaret Asirvatham of the chemistry department as its 1999 Sewall Teaching Fellow. The Teaching Fellowship will provide Asirvatham with monetary support to teach a course titled, "The Art and Science of Chemistry," to Sewall students next fall and spring semesters. She also will receive a stipend of $1,500.

CU-Boulder Â鶹ÒùÔº To Test Micro-Satellite Aboard Reduced Gravity NASA Aircraft

A team of four undergraduate engineering students at the University of Colorado at Boulder will test a satellite using micro-electromechanical systems, or MEMS, technology aboard NASA's KC-135 aircraft in March as part of the Reduced Gravity Student Flight Opportunities Program.

"Imagining and Remembering the West: Regional Identity and the Ghosts of Western Future and Past," a lecture by David Wrobel, associate professor of history at Widener University, will be held Thursday, March 4, at the University of Colorado at Boulder. "Seven Summits Of The Solar System" Topic Of CU-Boulder Program March 4

Two of the University of Colorado at Boulder's most distinguished alumni will give talks and a slide show on the seven highest mountains in the solar system March 4. The speakers, world renowned mountain climber Glenn Porzak and space scientist Joe Romig, will discuss the challenges of venturing to the summits of the solar system's highest peaks. The mountains range in height from 29,028-foot Mount Everest in the Himalayas to 75,000-foot Olympus Mons on Mars.

CU-Boulder Faculty Member Receives Friend Of Foreign Languages Award

Kuan Yi Rose Chang, director of the Anderson Language Technology Center (ALTEC) at CU-Boulder and an adjunct faculty member in East Asian languages and civilizations, will receive the Friend of Foreign Languages Award Feb. 25 from the Colorado Congress of Foreign Language Teachers. The award is one of six that will be presented to foreign language faculty and schoolteachers by CCFLT at its annual awards luncheon at the Adam's Mark Hotel, 1550 Court Place, in Denver.
