College and university students from around the state will compete in a Japanese speech contest at the University of Colorado at Boulder on April 10 at 1 p.m. in the Hellems Arts and Sciences Building, room 211. The contest is expected to be a stimulating one, according to Misae Nishikura, senior instructor in the department of East Asian languages and civilizations.

Li Tuo, the editor of Beijing Literature and a well-known literary critic in China, will give a public lecture on "Market, Ideology and Literary Criticism of the 1990s in China," on April 9 at 4 p.m. in the Hale Science Building, room 270, at the University of Colorado at Boulder. The rapid development of a market economy in China in the 1990s has profoundly affected Chinese literature and literary criticism, according to Minglang Zhou, assistant professor in the department of East Asian languages and civilizations.

DePAUL UNIVERSITY LAW PROFESSOR M. Cherif Bassiouni, professor of law at DePaul University and president of the International Institute of Higher Studies in Criminal Sciences, will deliver the 42nd annual John R. Coen Lecture in the Fleming Law Building on the CU-Boulder campus. Titled "Combating Impunity for International Crimes," the lecture will begin at 4 p.m. Thursday, April 8, in the Lindsley Memorial Courtroom. The talk is free and open to the public.

Ronald J. Stump, associate vice chancellor for student affairs and dean of students at the University of Colorado at Boulder, will serve as the interim vice chancellor for student affairs beginning May 16, pending approval by the Board of Regents April 22. Stump has served as associate vice chancellor and dean of students since 1996. Chancellor Richard Byyny appointed Stump to the interim position following the resignation of Jean Kim, vice chancellor for student affairs, effective May 15.

Patricia Nelson Limerick, the renowned University of Colorado at Boulder history professor who also serves as the official self-appointed "University Fool," will put on white face paint and make her annual tour of campus on April 1. Limerick will begin her tour at noon in the office of CU-Boulder Chancellor Richard L. Byyny in Regent Hall room 301. The entire tour is expected to last about an hour, with Byyny accompanying Limerick for a portion of it.

The College of Business at the University of Colorado at Boulder will host the 12th Annual Business Leadership Program from June 13 to 19, designed to expose high school juniors to business and computer skills and the rigors of college life. Participants live in a CU residence hall, meet College of Business faculty and Boulder-Denver area business leaders and learn college and financial aid application processes. The application deadline is April 16.

MEDIA ADVISORY University of Colorado at Boulder music professor and jazz saxophonist Willie Hill will perform as part of a jazz combo for state legislators on Wednesday, March 31, at the Colorado History Museum. The performance will incorporate a lecture about the history of jazz in America. The program is part of a series of "Smart Lunches" that the university presents for the legislature highlighting some of CU-Boulder's most dynamic scholars.

An exhibition featuring the work of masters of fine arts students at the University of Colorado at Boulder will be on display at the CU Art Galleries April 2-23, in the Sibell-Wolle Fine Arts Building on campus. Paintings, sculptures, photography and interactive installations will be shown that explore relationships and diverse cultures, as well as challenge the viewer's visual and perceptual awareness. All of the artists have exhibited their work nationally or internationally.

Four of the University of Colorado at Boulder's most distinguished professors in teaching and scholarship will give free public lectures on the frontiers of science ranging from astrophysics to anthropology during April. The campus talks are part of a new program featuring lectures by President's Teaching Scholars from CU-Boulder. Hosted by CU-Boulder Chancellor Richard L. Byyny and the Office of Community Relations, the Spring series is titled "Quests for Origins, Evolution and Immortality."

Appointed to the Tisone Chair in Accounting at CU's College of Business and Administration this spring, David Guenther brings years of professional experience as a CPA and an outstanding scholarly reputation to the college. Guenther, a CPA who holds a doctorate from the University of Washington, said he enjoys preparing accounting students for the real world. "You can tell the students what it's going to be like," he said. "It's helpful to have that background. No textbook can share that kind of information."
