University of Chicago Law School Professor Cass Sunstein will deliver the CU-Boulder School of Law's 47th annual John R. Coen Lecture, Monday, April 19, at 4:30 p.m. in the Lindsley Memorial Courtroom located in the Fleming Law Building. The lecture, titled "Are Judges Political: Bush, Confirmations and Beyond," is free and open to the public and to university students, staff and alumni. Sunstein also is a faculty member of the University of Chicago political science department and is the author of numerous legal articles and books.

NEWS TIP SHEET The former Interim Minister of Irrigation for Iraq, Eugene Z. Stakhiv, will speak at CU-Boulder April 15 from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in Duane Physics, room 1B20, on water management resources during 2003 in the war-torn country. Stakhiv was Iraq's interim Minister of Irrigation from April 2003 to August 2003 and is chief of the planning, policy and special studies division at the Institute for Water Resources at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. A reception will follow his talk.

The CU-Boulder chapter of the Pi Kappa Phi fraternity has been awarded a 2004 Award of Distinction by the North American Interfraternity Conference. The fraternity was one of only five chapters to receive the award from the organization representing 5,500 chapters on 800 campuses in the United States and Canada with approximately 350,000 undergraduate members.

The CU Parents Association has awarded $46,000 in scholarships to 46 undergraduate students at the University of Colorado at Boulder, according to Peter Simons, director of the Office of Parent Relations. The scholarship awards are merit-based and are presented each spring. The scholarships are made possible by CU Parents Association fund-raising efforts. Interested students must complete and submit an application by early March.

Recruiting is up slightly for graduating students at the University of Colorado at Boulder, and career counselors are urging students to ignore the lagging Colorado economy and aggressively pursue jobs.

John DiBiaggio, special assistant to University of Colorado President Elizabeth Hoffman and CU-Boulder Chancellor Richard L. Byyny, will be available to meet with faculty, staff and students next week to discuss concerns related to the investigation of the football program. In an e-memo from DiBiaggio, CU-Boulder faculty, staff and students and members of the CU system administration are encouraged to "meet with me to discuss any concerns you may have related to the investigation of the football program and/or the Athletic Department."

Hundreds of students from throughout Colorado will converge on the University of Colorado at Boulder campus to compete in Colorado History Day, which is part of the largest national humanities education program in the country. About 500 students in grades six through 12 will compete in the event, which is free and open to the public, on Saturday, April 24, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the CU-Boulder campus. The winners will represent Colorado in the National History Day competition in June, where students from 48 states will compete for national awards.

Chancellor Richard L. Byyny of the University of Colorado at Boulder today announced several new initiatives designed to supplement on-going campus efforts aimed at reducing high-risk alcohol use by students. The new initiatives will add more intensified research on alcohol issues on college campuses, expand CU-Boulder's education and intervention programs, and strengthen campus sanctions for violations of alcohol rules and laws, Byyny said. The new initiatives will be implemented by fall 2004, he said.

Â鶹ÒùÔº at the University of Colorado at Boulder will soon have additional living space and new recreational facilities at Bear Creek Apartments at Williams Village. A second 499-bed apartment building is scheduled to open Aug. 16. Construction of a new commons building to house a recreation center, police annex, leasing office and multipurpose facility began last month and is scheduled to open in September.

Â鶹ÒùÔº at the University of Colorado at Boulder will celebrate Engineering Days April 12 through April 16 with a series of fun and challenging events including robotics and rocket competitions and the annual College Egg Drop. Hosted by the University of Colorado Engineering Council and sponsored by various corporations and professional societies, Engineering Days is an annual celebration of the engineering profession and a chance for students to apply their engineering skills in fun and creative ways.
