University of Colorado at Boulder Distinguished Professor Marjorie McIntosh will give the commencement address on Friday, May 7, during the CU-Boulder spring commencement ceremony. The ceremony, which is free and open to the public, will begin at 8:30 a.m. in Folsom Stadium, where 4,640 degrees will be conferred. Guests are asked not to bring large purses or bags to the ceremony, and people entering the stadium may be subject to search.

After 36 hours of last-minute computer programming to prevent the University of Colorado at Boulder's network from being compromised by the invasive "Blaster" worm, Davis Chen finally relaxed -- and began preparing for class. A senior biology major and a member of CU-Boulder's Information Technology Services staff, Chen was congratulated April 13 by Chancellor Richard Bynny for winning the Student Employee of The Year award. Chen led the university's effort to prevent the Blaster worm from spreading just as students returned for the start of the fall 2003 semester.

Three University of Colorado at Boulder alumni are among the 12 distinguished guest professors and instructors from all over the world who will teach a series of unique summer courses at CU-Boulder starting in May. Astronaut James Voss, CNN senior editor James Schiffman and literature scholar Paul Youngquist each earned degrees from CU-Boulder and went on to become renowned in their respective fields. They are scheduled to teach classes as part of the CU-Boulder First Faculty in Residence Summer Term beginning May 10.

Six faculty, staff and students at the University of Colorado at Boulder have been named recipients of 2004 Equity and Excellence Awards. Winners received the awards at the 19th Annual Equity and Excellence Graduation Ceremony and Awards Banquet on April 22. Equity and Excellence awards are given to faculty and staff whose work best exemplifies a commitment to promoting the principles of academic excellence, cultural pluralism and diversity in the university community.

A new product that cools room-temperature drinks to ice cold in less than a minute is one of four business ideas created by student teams at the University of Colorado at Boulder that will compete for $5,000 on April 28 during an annual business plan competition held on campus. As finalists of the 2004 Ray and Dottie Joyce Undergraduate Business Plan Competition, the teams will make their final presentations before a panel of judges at 6 p.m. in room 224 of the CU-Boulder Leeds School of Business.

Lisa Peñaloza, associate professor of marketing at the University of Colorado at Boulder, will show and discuss a documentary film she made examining the Mexican American community and the market on May 5. The event will begin at 7 p.m. in the Chautauqua Community House at 900 Baseline Road in Boulder. The talk is part of the 2003-04 Chancellor's Community Lecture Series and is free and open to the public.

Bryn Weaver, a senior majoring in ecology and evolutionary biology at the University of Colorado at Boulder, has been named a 2004 Morris K. Udall Scholar, according to Lori Goodman, special scholars adviser. Crystal Olin, a sophomore majoring in architecture, received an Honorable Mention award. The Udall Scholarship program is a prestigious national competition for undergraduates in fields related to the environment and for American Indian and Alaska natives in fields related to health care or tribal policy. Scholars are selected on the basis of academic merit.

Six alumni and a former fund-raiser for the University of Colorado at Boulder's College of Engineering and Applied Science were honored with the Distinguished Engineering Alumni Award at the 39th annual Engineering Awards Banquet on April 16. The awards recognize alumni and special friends of the college who have distinguished themselves through outstanding personal qualities, knowledge and significant contributions in their fields.
