Scholarships available for student leaders and UMC student employees

The UMC Board awards scholarships of up to $1,000 each year.

The James E. Schafer Scholarship is for CU student leaders who currently involved in a Center for Student Involvement-recognized student group or organization.

The Carlos García UMC Director’s Scholarship is for students currently employed by the Basic Needs Center, Center for Student Involvement, CU Book Store, CU Collegiate Recovery Community, Cultural Events Board, Distinguished Speakers Board, Environmental Center, Fraternity & Sorority Life, Ink Spot, Off-Campus Housing & Neighborhood Relations, Radio 1190, Starbucks, University Memorial Center or Volunteer Resource Center.

   Applications will open Nov. 1, 2024

   Only complete applications will be considered for scholarships. Completion of the CU Boulder Scholarship Application and three essay questions is required.

*Important Note: Scholarships will be awarded during the 2025-26 Academic Year. You must be a continuing undergraduate or graduate student at the time that scholarships are awarded.*


James E. Schafer Scholarship Application

The James E. Schafer UMC Scholarship is for continuing undergraduate and graduate students who are currently involved in a Center for Student Involvement recognized student group or organization. CU Boulder alumn James E. Schafer was a respected and vocal advocate for students, and an active supporter of student government during his 23-year tenure as Director of the UMC.

To be eligible for consideration, applicants must:

  • Be a current CU Boulder undergraduate or graduate student in good standing with a minimum cumulative 2.5 GPA.
  • Be enrolled in full time credits at the time that applications are due (Spring 2025).
  • Be currently involved in a Center for Student Involvement recognized student group or organization at the time of application (minimum involvement of one semester).
  • Complete the CU Boulder Scholarship Application.
  • Submit this application by the posted deadline.

How to Apply

  1. Complete the CU Boulder Scholarship Application.
  2. Complete the required James E. Schafer UMC Scholarship essay questions. Applications and essay questions are due by Saturday, February 15 at 11:59 p.m.

Carlos García UMC Director’s Scholarship Application

The Carlos García UMC Director’s Scholarship is for continuing undergraduate and graduate students who are current employees in the Basic Needs Center, Center for Student Involvement, CU Book Store, CU Collegiate Recovery Community, Cultural Events Board, Distinguished Speakers Board, Environmental Center, Fraternity & Sorority Life, Ink Spot, Off-Campus Housing & Neighborhood Relations, Radio 1190, Starbucks, University Memorial Center or Volunteer Resource Center.

Carlos García was a strong advocate for enhancing the student experience through student employment and skill development. Throughout his 18-year tenure as Executive Director and Director of the UMC, Carlos García led the creation of a student leadership program, expanded the CU NightRide program, created a marketing department, a student involvement and activities department, and a diversity training program. 

To be eligible for consideration, applicants must:

  • Be a current CU Boulder undergraduate or graduate student in good standing with a minimum cumulative 2.5 GPA.
