What would happen to someone who fell into a black hole? Audience members will have a chance to find out at the CU Wizards show "Black Holes" on Saturday, June 15. Professor Andrew Hamilton of the astrophysical and planetary sciences department will demonstrate the concepts of black holes in CU-Boulder's Fiske Planetarium at 9:30 a.m.

The University of Colorado at Boulder has added 11 new Study Abroad programs, increasing the total number to 150 in 68 countries. CU-Boulder faculty members will accompany students in two of the new programs, the East Asian Studies summer program and the West African Music and Cultures summer program in Ghana. In the latter program, Professor Kwasi Ampene of the College of Music will instruct students in his native country.

More than 180 students from 15 Denver-area high schools will participate in the Pre-Collegiate Development Summer Residential Program at the University of Colorado at Boulder, the largest class in the program's history. According to Director Johanna Maes, 85 juniors and 101 sophomores are enrolled in programs that include a variety of academic courses, study skills instruction, and workshops on preparing for college entrance exams and the application process.

Â鶹ÒùÔº preparing to begin study at the University of Colorado at Boulder can get helpful advising and a sneak preview of life on campus starting June 13. CU-Boulder's College of Arts and Sciences orientation program will offer nine two-day sessions during the summer for freshmen and two for transfer students. Business students also are invited to some of the sessions. Engineering, music, and architecture and planning students must attend orientation programs at their colleges during the week before fall classes begin.

Robert H. Davis, chair of chemical engineering and Patten Professor at the University of Colorado at Boulder, has been named dean of the CU-Boulder College of Engineering and Applied Science. The appointment, effective July 1, was announced today by Provost Phil DiStefano pending final approval by the CU Board of Regents.

The surface of the sun is covered with transient storms, high and low pressure zones and swirling wind flows that vary from day to day like weather patterns on Earth's surface, according to new results by University of Colorado at Boulder researchers using the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory, or SOHO. The results are being presented at the spring American Astronomical Society meeting held in Albuquerque, N.M., June 2 to June 6. SOHO is a joint satellite mission between NASA and the European Space Agency.

A roundtable discussion on the experiences of graduates and teachers of the Boulder Japanese Language School during World War II and afterward will be held at the University of Colorado at Boulder on June 8 from 10 a.m. to noon at Old Main Chapel. According to Lynn Kalinauskas, associate director of the Center for Asian Studies, graduates of the Boulder Navy Language School played a key role in establishing the field of Japanese Studies in the post-war period, as well as contributing to U.S.-Japanese relations in various other fields.

Barring the common late afternoon thunderstorms of June, Coloradans will get a rare chance to see the moon slide across the face of the sun during a partial solar eclipse on June 10. Solar eclipses usually occur twice a year, but are not always visible from the United States, according to experts at Fiske Planetarium and Sommers-Bausch Observatory at the University of Colorado at Boulder. In fact, the next chance to see a solar eclipse in Colorado won't be until May 20, 2012, according to Robert Stoller, operations manager at Fiske Planetarium.

Alumni of the U.S. Navy Japanese/Oriental Language School will reunite at the University of Colorado at Boulder 60 years to the month after the Japanese Language School was moved to Boulder in 1942. Attendees will be welcomed at a luncheon on Friday, June 7, where a color guard will present the flag. The flag will be retired at the conclusion of the reunion Sunday, June 9. A plaque honoring the instructors and graduates of the school will be dedicated in the University Memorial Center at 4:30 p.m. on June 7. The dedication is free and open to the public.
