The old adage that "you are what you eat" is now more telling from a biochemical standpoint than most people have thought, according to new research reported by two University of Colorado at Boulder biologists.

Eldridge Greer, director of Counseling and Psychological Services at the University of Colorado at Boulder, has been elected to the board of governors of the Association of University and College Counseling Center Directors. Greer was elected to a three-year term and will be responsible for shaping diversity issues for counseling centers nationwide. "I am excited and humbled by the opportunity to provide this support to college counseling centers and their directors," Greer said. "It is another way that we're able to help students succeed."

As snow piles up in the high country and skiers and boarders hit the slopes, injuries are an all too common side effect. But CU-Boulder Kinesiology Professor Robert Mazzeo says there are several ways to stay injury free. "Fatigue is one of the primary causes of falls, which is the major cause of injuries," said Mazzeo. "The best way to battle fatigue is to get into shape."

University of Colorado at Boulder senior Artis Selby doesn't remember much of what happened in the hours and days following a serious car accident nearly four years ago, but she remembers well the difficult months and years she has spent putting her life back together. Selby will graduate from CU-Boulder on Dec. 20 with a bachelor's degree in psychology and will receive a teaching certificate in elementary education. She plans to teach special education, a goal she had set before the car accident that nearly took her leg.

The Cultural Events Board of the University of Colorado at Boulder's student government will host a talk on the Middle East by former U.S. Ambassador Dennis B. Ross on Jan. 22. Ross served as a special ambassador in the first Bush administration and the Clinton administration and for more than 12 years was instrumental in developing the U.S. role in the Middle East peace process.

The CU-Boulder departments of Transportation Services and Parking and Transit Services are merging to join resources and work collaboratively to address campus parking and transportation issues. The joined departments will be known as Parking and Transportation Services.

Risk management services at the University of Colorado at Boulder will be consolidated with those of other CU campuses under the system-wide University Risk Management Department, effective March 14, 2003. The merger is intended to increase efficiency through shared resources and greater coordination of programs throughout the four-campus university system, according to Paul Tabolt, CU-Boulder vice chancellor for administration. Currently, Boulder campus risk management reports to Ron Ried, assistant to the vice chancellor for administration.

Detailed information on budget reductions totaling about $11 million at the University of Colorado at Boulder was announced Tuesday, Dec. 10, by Chancellor Richard L. Byyny at a campus-wide open forum. In his remarks at the forum in the Glenn Miller Ballroom, Byyny said the campus will eliminate 33.5 vacant faculty positions, 26.25 vacant staff positions and 21.55 filled staff positions resulting in layoffs. Also, he said, selected operating budgets will be cut by nearly $2.1 million.
