University of Colorado at Boulder School of Law alumnus Timothy M. Tymkovich is the newest member of the United States Court of Appeals, the second highest court in the nation. The U.S. Senate confirmed Tymkovich by a vote of 58-41 on April 1. President Bush nominated him earlier this year. "I was honored to be selected by President Bush for the 10th Circuit vacancy created by Judge John Porfilio," said Tymkovich. "I am grateful for the positive vote by the U.S. Senate and I look forward to serving on the federal bench."

Fiske Planetarium and Sommers-Bausch Observatory at the University of Colorado at Boulder will hold Astronomy Day activities including rocket launches, sunspot viewing and demonstrations of planetarium and observatory equipment on Saturday, April 19, from noon to 10 p.m. "We are actually celebrating Astronomy Day a little early this year," said Sanlyn Buxner, an education specialist for Fiske Planetarium. The national day of celebration will be May 10, which is after CU-Boulder commencement, she said. "We wanted to do our celebration before students leave for the summer."

"Global Justice" is the topic of the 2003 Morris Colloquium to be held April 17-18 at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Sponsored by the CU-Boulder philosophy department, the colloquium will feature two lectures focusing on different aspects of global justice. Both events are free and open to the public.

Jason Newcomer, a CU-Boulder MBA student, has been selected to receive the Urban Land Institute's Graduate Student Fellowship. The fellowship program encourages top real estate students to become involved in the ULI and allows them to participate in professional events and educational activities at a formative point in their careers. In addition to receiving a two-year membership to the ULI, fellows are also given fee waivers and travel allowances to attend ULI-sponsored conferences and events.

Members of the University of Colorado community today praised the contributions of former CU President Quigg Newton, who died this morning at the age of 91. Newton was the eighth president of the University of Colorado, serving from Dec. 15, 1956 through June 30, 1963. The former Denver mayor died at Denver Health Medical Center. Newton was admitted to the hospital Wednesday after suffering a serious fall and cardiac arrest.

The CU-Boulder Alumni Association will honor 10 outstanding members of the campus community on May 7 including head women's basketball coach Ceal Barry. They will be recognized for their distinguished careers and exceptional contributions to CU and society during the 73rd Annual Alumni Awards ceremony at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 7, in the Old Main Chapel on the Boulder campus. Fred Glover, professor of operations management at the CU-Boulder Leeds School of Business, has been named a fellow of the Institute for Operations Research and Management Sciences. Other INFORMS fellows include four Nobel Prize winners, 23 Von Neumann Prize winners and 44 members of the National Academy of Engineering and the National Academy of Sciences.

Corporex, Bank One's Colorado Commercial Real Estate Group and GE Real Estate have donated $13,500 to establish a scholarship to the CU-Boulder Leeds School of Business. L.C. Fulenwider Inc., Milender White Construction and Pahl Pahl Pahl Architects-Planners also contributed to the scholarship fund. The scholarship will be awarded to a student from the Denver Public School District to attend the Leeds School.

The sounds of music, along with descriptions of how they are created and the rules of physics they follow, will be the subject of the April 19 CU Wizards show "The Physics of Music." Jim Faller, a physicist at the University of Colorado at Boulder, will present the show at 9:30 a.m. in Duane Physics, room G1B30. The show, aimed at students in grades five through nine, is free and open to the public.

Two University of Colorado at Boulder graduate school specialty programs were ranked in the top 10 in the nation and a third in the top 20 in the annual U.S. News & World Report graduate school rankings released today. The magazine's annual graduate school issue ranks roughly 10 graduate disciplines each year and ranks more than a dozen other graduate programs on a sporadic basis. U.S. News also ranks a number of specialty programs within particular disciplines.
