Officials at the University of Colorado at Boulder are investigating the cause of an asbestos contamination incident during an asbestos abatement project in a small powerhouse facility near the Williams Village residence hall complex. There was no exposure to students or the general public. On Thursday evening, air monitoring systems for the project detected asbestos levels that exceeded state and federal limits. The incident was contained to the powerhouse, a service building located near Williams Village at the intersection of 30th Street and Baseline Road.

A new study by a University of Colorado at Boulder geological sciences professor suggests one earthquake causing up to 1 million fatalities on Earth each century could occur unless more earthquake-resistant construction materials are implemented. Professor Roger Bilham's conclusions are based on a study of the world's urban population growth in the 21st century, including the number of rapidly expanding "supercities" and their locations close to major fault lines that have caused past temblors.

Seniors in Assistant Professor Kendra Gale's advertising campaign class at the University of Colorado at Boulder will present their communication plan for an illuminated flying disc -- a disc with fiber optic lights powered by a small battery -- on Tuesday, April 29, at 3:30 p.m. in room 425 of the University Memorial Center. The advertising project was developed for "Flashflight," a Boulder startup company owned by Jeff Scott and Jerry Moore, and a division of Playhard Inc.

The Board of Regents today designated the Alliance for Technology, Learning and Society (ATLAS) as the first new institute at the University of Colorado at Boulder in 35 years and the first campus institute with a mission that will equally balance teaching, research and outreach. ATLAS is a campuswide initiative that aims to prepare all students for lives and leadership careers in the Information Age and is dedicated to improving the understanding and application of information and communication technology.

The Robert H. and Beverly A. Deming Center for Entrepreneurship at CU-Boulder has appointed Kirk Holland, a general partner with Vista Ventures, a Broomfield venture capital firm, to its advisory board. The Deming Center is a joint program of the Leeds School of Business and the College of Engineering and Applied Science.

But for one art class in the Kittredge Honors Program, the final exam means creating a public art exhibit.

University of Colorado at Boulder student Corry L. Lee has been named a 2003 Goldwater Scholar by the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation. The Goldwater scholarship is a prestigious national competition for undergraduates in the fields of mathematics, science and engineering. The scholarship funds up to $7,500 per year for approximately 300 sophomores and juniors from across the country to complete their undergraduate degrees.

More than 60 student inventions ranging from devices that assist people with disabilities to new toys and whimsical Rube Goldberg contraptions will be demonstrated at CU-Boulder's ITLL Spring Design Expo on Saturday, April 26.

About two dozen tents were removed from Norlin Quadrangle at the University of Colorado at Boulder early today by inhabitants of the "Peace Camp/Shanty Town Project." The tents had been erected more than a week ago, in violation of campus policies on the use of university facilities.

Renowned historian Patricia Nelson Limerick of the University of Colorado at Boulder will give a public lecture May 7 titled "The Rise of Regret in the American West: How to Tell Meaningful Action from Pointless Wallowing." The talk is part of the Chancellor's Community Lecture Series and will be held from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the Chautauqua Community House at 900 Baseline Road in Boulder. The talk is free and open to the public and reservations are not required. Seating is limited.
