The third and final installment of a three-part series on youth violence, "Containing Crisis: Managing School and Community Emergencies," will be offered free to the public Nov. 30 by the Center for the Study and Prevention of Violence at the University of Colorado at Boulder.

A public symposium titled "Mars, Science, and Society" will be held at the University of Colorado at Boulder on Thursday, Dec. 2, the evening before NASAÂ’s unmanned Mars Polar Lander is slated to land near the southern pole of the Red Planet.

Irene Miller Wolfe, sister of Glenn Miller, the famous big band leader of the 1930s and 1940s, died Nov. 15, 1999 in Longmont, Colo. Mrs. Wolfe had been in poor health for the past year. She was born Emma Irene Miller on Feb. 21, 1916, in North Platte, Neb., to parents Lewis Elmer and Mattie Lou Cavender Miller. She lived with her parents and brothers a short time in North Platte before moving to Fort Morgan, Colo., where she spent her school years, graduating from Fort Morgan High School in 1933.

Nicole Cavarra, a marketing student at the University of Colorado at Boulder College of Business and Administration, was selected as one of 10 national recipients—and one of four undergraduates—for the prestigious Travel Industry Association (TIA) Foundation scholarship. The scholarship, awarded to the top students in the country, supports individuals pursuing careers in the tourism field. Cavarra is from Coal Creek, Colo., and has consistently been on the Dean’s List at CU-Boulder, with more than 20 honors accumulated so far in her undergraduate career.

Physicist Albert Einstein is the subject of a performance to be presented at the University of Colorado at Boulder Nov. 22 in a one-man theatrical performance presented by Len Barron titled "Walking Lightly: A Portrait of Einstein." The title refers to Einstein's contributions to the development of Quantum theory and his postulations on light quanta in 1905 and to the fact that he walked to work almost every day of his life.

He took part in 12 Antarctic explorations. His scientific research has appeared in 280 articles and reports. Last month CU-Boulder scientist John Behrendt was honored for 40 years of exploration and research. On Oct. 14 the Italian Antarctic National Research Program and the Academia Nazionale dei Linceia awarded Behrendt the first Felice Ippolito Gold Medal for his "significant and fruitful research in that continent." The medal is named after the late Professor Felice Ippolito, vice president of the Antarctic National Scientific Board at the time of his death.

University of Colorado at Boulder Chancellor Richard Byyny has announced that former biology professor Jane Bock will join Bob Fink and Jack Kelso in serving as a faculty ombudsperson. Bock, professor emeritus of EPO biology, retired in 1998 after 30 years of teaching at the university. She was the 1998 recipient of the Hazel Barnes Prize and is a former co-chair of the Sexual Harassment Committee.
