Dianna Ducote-Sabey has been selected to join the team of psychologists and counselors at Counseling and Psychological Services: A Multicultural Center, at the University of Colorado at Boulder. The appointment will be considered for approval at the Dec. 9 Board of Regents meeting in Boulder. Ducote-Sabey is scheduled to start Jan. 10. "We are very pleased to have Dianna as a staff psychologist working with CU-Boulder students, staff and faculty," said Eldridge Greer, director of the center.

Johanna B. Maes has been named the new director of the Pre-Collegiate Development program at the University of Colorado at Boulder, according to Ken Wilson, director of the Student Academic Services Center. The appointment will be considered at the Dec. 9 Board of Regents' meeting in Boulder and Maes will start Dec. 13, pending regents' approval. Maes, a CU-Boulder alumna, replaces Christopher Pacheco as director of the program. Pacheco assumed the position of associate director for academic support and grant operations at the center last January.

The University of Colorado at Boulder is seeking public feedback on a draft report of a campus self-study as part of its regular application for continued accreditation by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. The self-study report will be used by the NCA evaluating team in preparation for its campus visit April 17-19, 2000. Evaluations for NCA accreditation occur every 10 years.

The University of Colorado at Boulder Business Advancement Center received a prestigious national award for its economic development work in one of ColoradoÂ’s quickly growing industries. The National Association of Management and Technical Assistance Centers (NAMTAC) identified The Business Advancement Center's project, "Colorado Sees the Light, Supporting the Photonics Industry," as one of nine winning projects in the Economic Development category.

One of the most violent phenomena in astronomy -- supernovae -- will be the topic of a live astronomy show at Fiske Planetarium, Friday, Dec. 3, and Tuesday, Dec. 7, at 7:30 p.m. University of Colorado at Boulder astronomy Professor Richard McCray will delve into supernovae, looking at everything from ancient Chinese inscriptions to current observations of these rare stars and how new observations are used to measure the expansion of the universe.

A commuter cup for cyclists, a remote keyless bike lock and a rock climbing system for hoisting heavy equipment are among the innovative new products designed by CU-Boulder engineering students that will be demonstrated at the Integrated Teaching and Learning Program's Fall Design Expo. More than 60 student projects, ranging from new products to assistive technology devices designed for individual clients, to Rube Goldberg contraptions, will be showcased at the event.

Adults under the age of 65 who lacked private health insurance were 35 percent more likely to die between 1986 and 1995 than similar adults who had such insurance, according to a new study examining factors associated with mortality in the United States. Previous studies have highlighted the effects of income and education on mortality and both of these factors also have important links to heath insurance, according to three sociology professors in Colorado, Texas and Florida.

Faculty in the University of Colorado School of Law are among the best in the nation, according to two law experts in articles recently written for legal journals. The CU law faculty are ranked 22nd best in the country, according to an upcoming article in the Journal of Legal Studies by Brian Leiter, professor of law at the University of Texas at Austin.

The University of Colorado at Boulder will present its 35th annual Colorado Business Economic Outlook Forum at 1:15 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 6. The 2000 economic forecast, held in the grand ballroom of DenverÂ’s Brown Palace Hotel, is free and open to the public. The forum is presented by the CU-Boulder College of Business and Administration and addresses the state of Colorado's economy.

Roger Kennedy, former director of the National Park Service, will give a public lecture on "Burr, Hamilton, and Jefferson: Character, Reputation and Personalities" at 5 p.m. Dec. 3 in the Boulder Public Library Auditorium. Kennedy, director emeritus of the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History, will bring 40 years of insider knowledge of the American political process to the examination of three giants of the early republic: Aaron Burr, Alexander Hamilton, and Thomas Jefferson.
