All Systems Reported OK, Functioning In CU-Boulder's Initial Y2K Inventory The University of Colorado at Boulder passed the Y2K rollover without a whimper this morning, CU officials reported at about 12:30 a.m. "So far as we know at this time, all major systems appear to be normal and functioning as they should be," said Tom Carney, emergency management coordinator for CU-Boulder.

CU Professor Emeritus Bill Weber Receives Rock Garden Society Award

Bill Weber, professor emeritus of biology at the University of Colorado at Boulder and curator emeritus of the CU Museum, was honored with the prestigious Edgar H. Wherry Award of the North American Rock Garden Society. The award was established in 1973 after a Philadelphia scientist who published books on ferns and Phlox, a favorite group of rock garden plants. The award recognizes "a person who has made an outstanding contribution to the dissemination of botanical or horticultural information about native North American plants."

CU-Boulder Library Holds Senior Day On Jan. 5

Colorado Most Dangerous State In Nation For Avalanche Fatalities

Two Colorado avalanches in December that apparently claimed the lives of two Boulder County men are a somber reminder of the risks that hikers, skiers, snowboarders and snowmobilers face in the Colorado mountains each winter. CU-Boulder student Justin Colonna is presumed to have been killed in a Dec. 18 avalanche on South Arapaho Peak west of Boulder. Broomfield resident Michael Barrett was killed on Quandary Peak near Breckenridge Dec. 21.

Creation Of Quantum Gas By CU And NIST Named One Of Top 10 Science Stories For 1999

The creation of a new quantum gas at JILA, a laboratory run by the University of Colorado at Boulder and the National Institute of Standards and Technology, has been named one of the top 10 scientific advances of 1999 by the editors of the prestigious journal Science. The experiment was conducted by Deborah Jin, a NIST physicist and adjoint assistant professor of physics at CU-Boulder, and graduate student Brain DeMarco.

Distinguished Professor David Prescott To Deliver Commencement Address

When David Prescott stands before the last graduating class of the millennium at the University of Colorado at Boulder to deliver his commencement address, he will do so to honor the students. Prescott is a Distinguished Professor in CU-BoulderÂ’s molecular, cellular and developmental biology department who has won numerous awards for his teaching and research. He plans to remind the graduates to take the lessons they have learned at CU with them wherever they go and to savor the achievement their degrees represent.
