George Keyworth II, White House science adviser to former President Ronald Reagan from 1981 to 1986, will speak at the University of Colorado at Boulder on Tuesday, Jan. 31, at 7 p.m. in room 270 of the Hale Science Building. The free, public event is part of a yearlong lecture series titled "Policy, Politics and Science in the White House: Conversations with Presidential Science Advisers," sponsored by CU-Boulder's Center for Science and Technology Policy Research.

Leaders of Colorado's school choice community will join researchers, educators and educational policy-makers Jan. 23 for an all-day conference at the University of Colorado School of Law to discuss current and future potential effects of school choice policies on integration and segregation.

Daniel Sher, dean of the University of Colorado at Boulder College of Music, has been named president of the National Association of Schools of Music. Sher had been the association's vice president, but assumed leadership of the association Jan. 1 after outgoing president Karen Wolff resigned for family health reasons. Sher will serve as president through the association's annual meeting in November, at which time he can be elected for a full term.

Senegal and India are among the top 10 lesser-known destinations for study abroad to be discussed Jan. 30 at an informational meeting for University of Colorado at Boulder students. "The Top 10 Best Kept Secrets of Study Abroad" meeting will be held in rooms 415 and 417 of the University Memorial Center from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. Information will be available for programs in Senegal, India, Costa Rica, Denmark, France, Germany, Mexico, Morocco, Spain and Thailand.

University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Professor Timothy Pauketat will give a lecture at the University of Colorado at Boulder Saturday, Jan. 28, on an explosion of cultural complexity 1,000 years ago from a city known as Cahokia near present-day St. Louis.

University of Colorado at Boulder physics Professor William Ford has been awarded the American Physical Society's 2006 W.K.H. Panofsky Prize in Experimental Particle Physics. Ford received the national award in recognition of his research to better understand the innermost workings of matter, especially the nature of radioactive decay. He has spent the better part of 30 years working on collider projects, including electron-positron annihilation experiments, from which findings have been used to help piece together clues about the early evolution of the universe.

As the typically colder spring semester begins, fire officials urge University of Colorado at Boulder students to take extra care to avoid dangerous and costly candle fires. "Boulder Fire responded to two fires in December involving candles in rental housing units," said Sherry Kenyon, fire safety coordinator for Boulder Fire Rescue. "Tenants were displaced, property was lost and most people did not have renter's insurance -- a very low-cost way to insure your own property."

The way lizards and people run will be part of the CU Wizards show titled "Muscles and Movement" presented Jan. 21 by the dean of the University of Colorado at Boulder College of Arts and Sciences. Todd Gleeson, dean and professor of integrative physiology, and veterinarian Dana Ruehlman, an instructor of integrative physiology at CU-Boulder, will present the show at 9:30 a.m. in the Cristol Chemistry and Biochemistry Building, room 140. It is free and open to the public.

A University of Colorado at Boulder history professor's award-winning book about the French and Indian War is the foundation of a new series airing nationally on the Public Broadcasting Service starting Jan. 18. CU-Boulder Professor Fred Anderson also served as an adviser to the PBS program and wrote a "companion book" for the production titled "The War That Made America."

A new University of Colorado at Boulder study shows that people who awaken after eight hours of sound sleep have more impaired thinking and memory skills than they do after being deprived of sleep for more than 24 hours.
