Fall break is just around the corner. Many campus services including dining, bus transportation and residence hall front desk hours will be reduced throughout fall break. Whether you live on or off campus, review some reminders and tips before you leave town.

On-campus residents

All residence halls and Bear Creek remain open for any resident throughout fall break. Residence hall access doors will be locked and accessible by current residents only.

Before you leave for break:

Close and lock windows and close blinds.
Unplug electrical appliances (residence hall students only).
Clean your micro-fridge and set it to low (residence hall students only).
Set your heaters on low.
Remove trash and recycling from the building.
Turn off your lights.
Make sure your room door is completely closed and locked.
Remember to pack all important documents or valuable items such as plane tickets, ID and passport, jewelry, medicines, etc.
Store bikes in your room during breaks if space is available and they do not block exits.

Off-campus residents

If you are leaving for break:

Before leaving, find someone willing to clear snow off your property. Snow must be removed from sidewalks within 24 hours of a snowfall.
Ask a friend to collect your mail and pick up newspapers and trash in your yard. If you’ll be gone longer, consider having the post office hold your mail while you’re away.
Make sure all windows and doors are locked. Move expensive items like laptops away from windows where they may be visible or bring them with you. Make sure your bike is securely locked or bring it inside if you can.
Set your lights on a timer and your heat to a reasonable temperature, about 60 degrees, to prevent pipes from freezing.
Don’t leave pets by themselves. Find someone to take care of them while you are away.

Campus Dining Services

On-campus dining options will be limited during fall break. View dining hours and closures during fall break.

Getting around campus

The Buff Bus will cease normal operations at the end of the regular schedule on Friday, Nov. 22. No service will be offered Nov. 23–30. On Sunday, Dec. 1, weekend Will Vill service will be from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Regular Buff Bus service resumes Monday, Dec. 2.

CU NightRide

CU NightRide will be closed Nov. 23 through Dec. 1. We encourage you to consider alternative transportation options through CU Boulder Parking & Transportation Services.

University Memorial Center

The UMC will be open limited hours on Nov. 22, Nov. 25–27 and Nov. 29. The building will be closed Nov. 23–24, Nov. 28 and Nov. 30–Dec. 1.
The Connection will have limited hours on Nov. 22 and Nov. 25–27. This location will be closed Nov. 23-24 and Nov. 28–Dec. 1.
The Alienware Buffalo Esports and Gaming Lounge will be open from noon to 5 p.m. on Nov. 22. This location will be closed Nov. 23 through Dec. 1.

Buff Pantry

The Buff Pantry will be closed from Nov. 25 through Dec. 2. Regular hours resume Dec. 3.

Rec Center

Review special fall break hours for the main Student Recreation Center and Williams Village Rec Center.

Health and Wellness Services

Health and Wellness Services departments will have adjusted hours over fall break.

Career Services

Career Services will offer virtual appointments Nov. 25–27 and will be closed Nov. 28–29. Please check Buff Portal Advising for appointment times or chat online to schedule an appointment.

CU Boulder's campus is home to, or frequented by, raccoons, deer, squirrels, beavers, prairie dogs, and dozens of species of birds. Foxes have also been making a rebound in the area. On rare occasions, we even get visits from larger animals such as coyotes and bears.

It’s important to remember, however, that wildlife is wild for a reason and should be treated as such for the well-being of both the animals and our people. CU Boulder’s Environmental Services team offers a few simple reminders for students, faculty and staff about interactions between people and wildlife.

Do not approach or feed wild animals on campus, even squirrels or birds.
If you are bitten by a squirrel or other animal on campus, clean the wound thoroughly and contact Medical Services at Wardenburg Health Center. They can provide information about wound care, signs of infection and next steps. While squirrels do not pose a risk for rabies, they can transmit other diseases that may require a tetanus booster.
Do not feed the turtles or fish living in and around Varsity Lake, the Kittredge ponds, or other ponds around campus.
If you come across an injured or dead animal, report it to the CU Facilities Management (FM) service desk at 303-492-5522 so that designated campus employees can properly assist or remove the animal.
Problems or human contact with squirrels, rodents, birds, or other animals can likewise be reported to the FM service desk at 303-492-5522 at any time of day or night.
Colorado Parks and Wildlife’s website includes several resources and tips, including how to avoid wildlife conflicts and why feeding wildlife is a bad idea. Websites for the city of Boulder and Boulder County also include valuable information related to local wildlife.
If a bear does come on campus, wildlife managers want to remove it safely, and without tagging it unless absolutely necessary. A tag will show that it has been to the city once. If a bear gets two tags, it will need to be euthanized by state law. More information about bears from Colorado Parks and Wildlife.

“CU Boulder’s setting provides ample opportunities for observing wildlife, enhancing our enjoyment of campus and the outdoors,” said Wildlife Manager and Integrated Pest Manager Troy Muller.

CU staff works together with wildlife specialists, Boulder Animal Control and Colorado Parks and Wildlife when dealing with wildlife issues on campus, Muller said, and wildlife is handled with the utmost care to ensure the safety of the animal.

“CU also invests in an Integrated Pest Management department to make sure that when animals find their way to campus, they are cared for properly and when necessary safely removed from campus, ensuring the campus populace and the animal are safe,” Muller said.

“What makes CU Boulder such a special campus is the staff, faculty and student body can observe the wildlife and we can all coexist with each other. I feel very fortunate to work on such a beautiful campus and be around all the beautiful creatures that call this place home."

Bears are sporadically seen in the Boulder foothills and, on rare occasion, campus during the months they are active, which is typically mid-March through November. Learn how to safely co-exist with bears.
