Searching for a job can be difficult for anyone, but when you're gay there are some additional questions. •Should you reveal your sexual orientation during a job interview? •If you don't say you’re gay during the interview but decide to bring it up later, what might the consequences be? •How can you find out if a company is gay-friendly?

CU-Boulder will host the Second Annual Communities of Color and Allies Symposium on Nov. 19, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Coors Events/Conference Center in room 4. The symposium will feature a variety of diversity issues concerning the campus and other communities, and will include a video teleconference at 11 a.m. titled, “Race Relations in Higher Education: A Prescription for Empowerment and Progress.”

A suspect has been arrested in connection with a recent assault on an 18-year-old male student at the University of Colorado at Boulder near the Williams Village residence hall complex. LaMarcus Jenkins, 20, of Denver turned himself in to Denver police following the issuance of an arrest warrant by the CU Police Department Thursday, Nov. 6. CU detectives executed a search warrant for JenkinsÂ’ residence at about 6 p.m. The suspect was not at home when officers appeared at the residence, but came to Denver police headquarters at about 10 p.m.

It’s airborne, it’s mutating and it could keep you sick in bed for days. It’s the flu, and Wardenberg Health Center physician Jim Schlegel of the University of Colorado at Boulder advises people to get immunized against it. “Someone may be in bed for three days, flat out, having to be nearly fed by someone willing enough to do that,” Schlegel says of the severity of the flu.

A new endowed chair in petroleum geology has been established at the University of Colorado at Boulder, funded by a gift of $3 million from Bruce and Marcy Benson, according to Chancellor Richard L. Byyny. Byyny made the surprise announcement during the dedication ceremony for the Benson Earth Sciences Building Oct. 30 on the Boulder campus.

A unique CU-Boulder engineering facility that provides real-world experience to more than 1,200 undergraduates and hundreds of K-12 students and teachers each year will be the site of two public open houses on consecutive Saturdays beginning Nov. 8.

Editors: Hank Brown will speak on “Reflections on My Years in Public Service,” at a private luncheon at 12:30 p.m. preceding the public ceremony. Brown’s talk starts about 1 p.m. in the Aspen Room, 215-216, at the University Memorial Center. Reporters and photographers may attend, but should defer questions until the 2 p.m. ceremony. Former U.S. Sen. Hank Brown (R-Colo.) will attend a ceremony Nov. 10 at the University of Colorado at Boulder in recognition of the donation of his congressional papers to the Archives of the University of Colorado Libraries.

The Office of Institutional Relations at the University of Colorado at Boulder has announced two new staff appointments. Wynn Martens, former events and commencement coordinator for the university, has been named director of community relations and special events. She will be responsible for developing and maintaining CU community outreach programs, planning commencement and external events for the Chancellor's Office, and for managing the Chancellor's Advisory Council, the faculty speaker's bureau, the Pathfinder's Program and CU This Summer.

Zan Johns, a long-time employee of the University of Colorado at Boulder, has been named interim director of human resources, pending approval by the CU Board of Regents. Johns will assume the position to become vacant when former Director Shari Robertson transfers to a new position in the office of Vice Chancellor Paul Tabolt, effective Nov. 14. Robertson will provide assistance in the areas of sexual harassment issues, human resources legal issues, personnel litigation and human resources policy development.

The Career Services office at the University of Colorado at Boulder will hold its Annual Statewide Minority Career conference titled “Diversity In The Work Force” on Nov. 12. The conference will be held in the University Memorial Center Ballroom from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. to provide an opportunity for African American, Asian American and Hispanic-Latino college and high school students from throughout Colorado to gain valuable information on various career options.
