As midterms wind down, many University of Colorado at Boulder students are relishing the break. But for some, a Saturday filled with painting, weeding and cleaning will do just fine.

Using data from remote sensing satellites, researchers at the University of Colorado at Boulder are investigating a key factor that can be used in predicting the extent of a hurricane's fury. A hurricane's passage over a warm ocean eddy or current has been linked to a marked intensification of hurricane winds.

The School of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Colorado at Boulder has established the Columbine Unity and Diversity Scholarship for minorities or other pre-journalism majors who help promote diversity through their news coverage. CU-Boulder freshmen Issac Lopez and Michelle Flores, the first recipients of the award, each received $1,000. Both students enrolled at CU this semester as pre-journalism majors after they completed a journalism course in the summer of 1998 under CU-Boulder's Pre-Collegiate Development Program.

The names of three candidates for the position of Director of Enrollment Management at the University of Colorado at Boulder were forwarded to Vice Chancellor Phil DiStefano on Oct. 11. Two were internal candidates from CU-Boulder while the third was from another institution. The external candidate withdrew his name from consideration on Oct. 11. The two internal finalists are Barbara Schneider, currently serving as interim director of enrollment management, and William Haid, registrar, according to Michael Grant, search committee chair.

Do bias-motivated incidents happen at CU-Boulder? What can you do if you, or someone you know, becomes a target? These are some of the questions to be addressed at a panel discussion, "Hate on Campus: Bias-Motivated Incidents at CU," on Thursday, Oct. 21. The panel is part of events scheduled for CU-Boulder's Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Awareness Month.

Award winning author and associate professor Judy Yung will explore the rich history of Chinese women in her lecture — "Unbound Feet, Unbound Voices: A History of Chinese Women in San Francisco." The talk will be held Monday, Oct. 25, at 4 p.m. in the University of Colorado at Boulder’s University Memorial Center Forum Room. Yung will use an intimate collection of letters, essays, poems, photographs and oral histories to bring to life the experiences of Chinese women from all walks of life — everyone from immigrant wives of merchants to prostitutes.

This fall saw the inauguration of ACCESS -- Available Credit Courses for Eligible Special Â鶹ÒùÔº -- through the University of Colorado at BoulderÂ’s Division of Continuing Education, allowing nondegree students to register for on-campus classes. The program was formerly known as SAVE, the space available program. "This program demonstrates one of the ways that CUÂ’s schools and colleges partner with Continuing Education to serve the needs of nontraditional students in the community," said Anne Heinz Colgan, dean of Continuing Education.

The Kresge Foundation has awarded a grant of $600,000 to CU-Boulder's College of Engineering and Applied Science to assist with the construction of the Discovery Learning Center, an innovative facility that will help to expand student involvement in research. The Kresge Foundation grant represents the latest success in a multi-year fund-raising campaign that already has generated $6 million in private giving and bequests for the project. The state of Colorado also has committed $7.8 million, or about half of the $15.3 million cost of the facility.

The University of Colorado at Boulder's Center for Asian Studies and the department of anthropology are presenting 14 films in the South Asian Film Series from October through December. On Tuesday, Oct. 12, two movies in the film series will be shown from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Hale Science Building, room 270. "Tales of Pabuji," is a study of the Rajasthani tradition of story-telling and "Wedding of the Goddess," depicts the celebration of South India's lavish temple festival for Meenakshi, the patron goddess of the city of Madurai, and her brother, Lord Alagar.
