The University Memorial Center and Libby Hall at the University of Colorado at Boulder will host the 2001 Spring Boulder Campus Blood Drive. Open to the public, the blood drive will be in the UMC Ballroom Feb. 27 and Feb. 28 from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and March 1 in Libby Hall in the Pit room from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Those who want to reserve a specific time slot should call (303) 492-5473 to make a reservation, or visit the blood drive table outside the UMC Forum Room Feb. 19 through Feb. 23, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. People can also donate blood without an appointment.

The University of Colorado at Boulder has added 14 new programs to the choices undergraduate students have to study around the globe, including six in the increasingly popular destination of Australia. Other offerings include the first Study Abroad program in Norway and the first university-based program in India. The programs will start this summer and fall. The deadline to apply for any summer, fall or academic year program is March 1.

University of Colorado at Boulder Assistant Professor Deborah Wuttke will perform several experiments and set off a minor explosion during her CU Wizards show "Biochemistry for Kids." The free hourlong show will be on Saturday, Feb. 24, at 9:30 a.m. in Cristol Chemistry room 140. CU Wizards is an annual series that introduces topics in astronomy, chemistry and physics and is intended primarily for students in grades five through nine.

"The Information Revolution: Silicon Valley and the American West" A lecture on "The Information Revolution: Silicon Valley and the American West" will be presented on March 1 by Douglas S. Robertson of the University of Colorado at Boulder. The lecture will be held from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in CU-Boulder's Old Main Chapel and is presented by the Center of the American West. The event is free and open to the public.

The University of Colorado Friends of the Libraries will present a talk by noted mystery writer Miriam Grace Monfredo on "Stalking the Mysteries of Hidden History" at the ninth annual Just Desserts program on Friday, March 2, at 7 p.m. in CU Boulder's Fleming Law Building. A historian and former librarian, Monfredo is a well-traveled speaker on the history of America and the evolution of women and minority rights. A resident of Rochester, N.Y., she has lectured in 34 states in the past three years.

Michael Delaney has been named director of the Office of International Education at the University of Colorado at Boulder, according to Elease Robbins, associate vice chancellor for student affairs and dean of students. The appointment was recently approved by Chancellor Richard Byyny. Delaney will assume the position on Feb. 15. Delaney has held the post on an interim basis since July and replaces former director Jean Delaney, who became manager of the Student Odyssey Project last semester.

Kristen Hislop, former account director at Boulder's Leopard Communications, has been appointed director of the Profiles in American Enterprise program in the CU-Boulder College of Business. "Kristen is well connected with the business community and will help us forge important relationships with our external constituencies," said business Dean Steven Manaster. "She brings the strong combination of a CU MBA and impressive experience in consulting and e-commerce. This acquaints her with the high expectations of our university and the demands of world business."

In the wake of the California energy crisis, people across the nation have wondered, could energy shortages happen in my state? While the situation in California seems dire, it's not likely to be repeated in other states, and some energy experts predict the tight fuel supplies that have raised prices nationally will ease by next winter. Others, like CU-Boulder's Jan Kreider, founding director of the Joint Center for Energy Management, believes the crisis will spur utility companies to seek alternative energy sources.

Fiske Planetarium at the University of Colorado at Boulder will tour the Milky Way during "City of Stars," Friday, Feb. 23, at 7:30 p.m. at the planetarium. The pre-recorded show explores some of Earth's galactic neighbors - stars, nebulae and clusters. Visitors also will tour distant galaxies beyond the Milky Way.
