Lori Goodman has been appointed special scholars adviser at the University of Colorado at Boulder, a new position created to enhance student preparation in competing for well-known national or international scholarships such as the Rhodes, Truman, Goldwater or Marshall. The appointment was made by Michael Grant, associate vice chancellor for academic affairs, and approved by CU-Boulder Chancellor Richard Byyny.

John Glenn Jr., will gather in Denver for the 12th annual National Service Learning Conference being hosted by the University of Colorado at Boulder and the Colorado Department of Education.

A seminar series on sustainable development will kick off a new initiative in "Earth Systems Engineering" by the department of civil, environmental and architectural engineering at the University of Colorado at Boulder. The first seminar, titled "Designing a Sustainable Future," by William A. Wallace, senior vice president of Ch2M Hill, will be held on Tuesday, March 20, from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m., in the Engineering Center at CU-Boulder, Room ECCR 245. The seminar is free and open to the public.

A national and international group of scholars, business leaders, diplomats and politicians will gather at the CU-Boulder School of Law April 7-8 to examine the roles played by environmental non-profit, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and faith-based organizations in shaping domestic and international policy and law.

Calendar Item Fiske Planetarium at the University of Colorado at Boulder will explore the dynamics of the solar system and the way it was shaped by millions of collisions in "Cosmic Collisions and Our Solar System," on Friday, March 23, at 7:30 p.m. at the planetarium. The pre-recorded show travels back in time to the beginning of the solar system when the devastating impact of asteroids, comets and millions of chunks of floating debris reworked the surfaces of the planets.

Nikolay Malyshev, head of Russia's federal program on the application of information technologies to education, will visit three University of Colorado campuses and present a public talk during his March 14-19 visit. Malyshev is visiting Colorado as part of an effort to develop distance education in Russia in cooperation with leading schools and industries around the world.

One of Business Week magazine's top 25 most influential people in e-business will speak on March 19 at the University of Colorado's College of Business. Mohanbir Sawhney has gained acclaim for advising more than 25 companies while writing pace-setting predictions about e-commerce of the future. His work covers the mechanics of e-marketplaces, neutral online e-commerce hubs where buyers and sellers get equal treatment and examines why business-to-business e-commerce will become more prevalent than e-tailing.

According to the Office of Career Services, 97 percent of the students in the CU School of Law's class of 2000 found jobs in the legal profession within six months of graduation, giving last year's class the highest employment rate of any in the history of the law school. "These results speak volumes about the high quality of our students and faculty, as well as the dedication of our Office of Career Services," said Dean Harold Bruff.

While many University of Colorado at Boulder students will enjoy vacation time this summer, five members of the Pi Kappa Phi fraternity will pedal 3,500 miles to raise money and awareness for people with disabilities. CU juniors Mike Krieves, Ryan Fligg and Chris Chrisman, and seniors Ty Hampton and Will Acosta-Trejo will join 65 other Pi Kappa Phi members from across the country for PUSH America's 13th annual Journey of Hope ride. PUSH America was started by the national chapter of Pi Kappa Phi in 1977 to improve the lives of people with disabilities.

Bose-Einstein condensates can sometimes explode like a pocket-sized supernova, but when they"re not doing that they can look like the inside of a cigar bar, awash in insubstantial smoke rings. These two disparate images of one of modern physics' most mysterious creations come out of recent research efforts at the Commerce Department's National Institute of Standards and Technology in cooperation with the University of Colorado at Boulder.
