A team of five CU-Boulder MBA students will become venture capitalists for a day at the West Regional Venture Capital Investment Competition at the University of Southern California Marshall School of Business, Lloyd Grief Center for Entrepreneurial Studies on Feb. 8 and Feb. 9. The one-of-a-kind competition gives MBA students from top business schools a real-life venture capital experience. Teams are placed in the role of a venture capital firm reviewing business plans and presentations from real companies seeking investment.

Teams are placed in the role of a venture capital firm reviewing business plans and presentations from real companies seeking investment.

Paintings, poetry and 3-D sculpture will adorn a cultural center inside the CU-Boulder University Memorial Center this spring, and the project's coordinator is looking for students and local artists to contribute. Shanti Zaid, a sophomore ethnic studies and history major, is hoping the project he proposed will "provide a space within CU-Boulder for students to express themselves artistically." The display is planned to be completed by April, and will hang in the Dennis Small Cultural Center in the UMC.

The University of Colorado at Boulder's Program Council has announced the CU-Boulder Trivia Bowl will return for the second year of its revival in 2002 to entertain viewers and participants as teams go head-to-head on pop-culture trivia questions. Trivia Bowl 2002 will take place the week of April 1 through April 5 in the bowl's traditional location, the Glenn Miller Ballroom of the University Memorial Center, at 3 p.m. daily. The bowl was revived in April 2001 after an eight-year hiatus.

Employees at the University of Colorado at Boulder pledged more than $140,000 to the 2002 Colorado Combined Campaign, the largest amount contributed since the program's inception 14 years ago. The CU-Boulder pledges exceeded this year's goal by more than $10,000. Since the drive for charitable agencies began in 1988, CU-Boulder has contributed more than $1.5 million, making it the state's biggest contributor.

The Deming Center for Entrepreneurship at CU-Boulder has received a $10,000 grant to support the center's summer entrepreneurship internship program for MBA students. It is the sixth grant awarded to the center by the Kauffman Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership at the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, a not-for-profit organization that aims to accelerate entrepreneurship in America. The Deming Center is a joint program of the CU-Boulder Leeds School of Business and the College of Engineering.

Environmental artist Betsy Damon will give a free public lecture Feb.12, at 7:30 p.m. at the University of Colorado at Boulder as part of the Fine Arts department's Visiting Artist Program. The talk will be in the Sibell Wolle Fine Arts building, room N141. Damon's large-scale environmental projects focus on waterway pollution and its impact on the survival of the planet. She has used water as the central theme for her work since 1985.

Jim Martin, a former senior attorney at Environmental Defense and staff member for Sen. Tim Wirth, has been appointed director of the Natural Resources Law Center at the CU-Boulder School of Law. He took over duties in early January, following a national search. Martin replaces Gary Bryner, who stepped down as director last spring to pursue fieldwork for NRLC as a staff member in Utah.

The University of Colorado at Boulder will offer a variety of events in February in honor of Black Awareness Month. Event coordinators hope to provide opportunities for people in the university and local communities to expand their understanding of African American life and history.

The Artist Series will host two educational events with the Trinity Irish Dance Company on Wednesday, Feb. 6, before the company's performance in Macky Auditorium that evening. A lecture-demonstration will be held at Creekside Elementary School, 3740 Martin Dr. in Boulder, and a master class for CU students will be at the Charlotte York Irey Studios in the University Theatre Building on the CU-Boulder campus. Both events will begin at 10 a.m. and will feature dancers and musicians from the company.
