Steven Manaster, dean of the University of Colorado at Boulder Leeds School of Business, has appointed Professor David Guenther associate dean of faculty and academic programs. "David is a strong leader and nationally renowned researcher," Manaster said. "He supports the values of the Leeds School and will help us move forward in our goal of being a top-25 school." Guenther holds the Tisone Chair in Accounting and is an expert in financial accounting and taxation. He was awarded the American Taxation Association Manuscript Award in 1992, 1998 and 1999.

Philosophy and Environmental Studies Professor Alan Carter will continue the Chancellor's Community Lecture series with his presentation, "Evolution and the Problem of Altruism" at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 1, at The Academy. Located at 970 Aurora Ave. in Boulder, the lecture series at The Academy is free and open to the public, and is co-sponsored by The Academy and the University of Colorado at Boulder Office of Community Affairs.

The Office of Diversity and Equity at the University of Colorado at Boulder awarded six faculty, staff and students the 2002 Equity and Excellence Awards on Thursday, April 25, at the 17th Annual Equity and Excellence Graduation Ceremony and Awards Banquet.

A technology to improve the shelf life of bottled products is one of four business plans created by University of Colorado at Boulder students that will compete for $5,000 in prize money on May 1. The other business ideas include personalized discount cards for college students, an advanced tripod for semiprofessional photographers and an inventory tracking system using radio frequencies.

The American Chemical Society has named University of Colorado at Boulder Professor Emeritus Charles DePuy winner of the James Flack Norris Award in Physical Organic Chemistry in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the field. DePuy received the prestigious award during the American Chemical Society National Meeting, held April 7 to April 11 in Orlando, Fla.

The University of Colorado at Boulder College of Music has awarded the recipients of two endowed chairs, the first two such chairs in the college's history.

CU-Boulder School of Law Professor Barbara Bintliff will receive the Clifford Calhoun Public Service Award on April 26 in recognition of her contributions to the law school and the legal community. The award was established by an anonymous donor in 1998 in honor of CU-Boulder emeritus law Professor Clifford Calhoun, who retired in May of that year. The award is given to those who exemplify the spirit and tradition of Calhoun's altruistic career.

CU-Boulder students have selected four faculty members to receive the 2002 Teacher Recognition Awards, organized and administered by undergraduate student members of the CU-Boulder Alumni Association, on May 7.
