Fans traveling to home CU football games are encouraged to use RTD's BuffRide, which provides a hassle-free alternative to driving and avoids the expense of increased parking fees. This year parking fees for football games are $10 per space and campus parking lots have 200 fewer spaces making availability tight, according to Mark Stevens, CU-Boulder's Parking and Transit Outreach Coordinator.

The Department of Housing at the University of Colorado at Boulder has begun the next phase in elevating the standard for dining services. After completing the first phase, the "Alley @ Farrand Hall" in July, design plans for the Libby Hall dining area are being prepared for review and work is scheduled to begin during winter break.

New federal regulations covering international student visas may make it harder for those students to get visas to study in the United States, and could change the 'show rate' for international students at the University of Colorado at Boulder next year. But this fall, the numbers of new and returning international students is shaping up to be about equal to or slightly higher than the university's fall 2001 international student enrollment of 1,110. Final figures will not be available until later in September.

Larry Bell has been named the new director of International Student and Scholar Services at the University of Colorado at Boulder, formerly known as Foreign Student and Scholar Services. Bell replaces Phil deNeeve, who retired from the post last spring, and comes to CU-Boulder from the CU-Denver campus where he was director of the Office of International Education.

University of Colorado at Boulder Professors John Bennett and Stein Sture have been appointed associate deans for the College of Engineering and Applied Science, effective at the start of the fall semester. The appointments, announced by engineering Dean Robert Davis, complete the formation of the college's new leadership team. Davis began his appointment as dean of the college on July 1.

The mysteries of black holes will be unraveled at Fiske Planetarium on the campus of the University of Colorado at Boulder on Friday, Sept. 20, and Tuesday, Sept. 24, at 7:30 p.m. Professor Andrew Hamilton will present his live star show, "Black Holes and Relativity," to kick off Fiske Planetarium's fall 2002 schedule of monthly astronomy talks. The live talks are given by CU-Boulder professors and guest lecturers.

On the evening of Sept. 10, professors from eight different departments at the University of Colorado at Boulder will gather for a public teach-in titled "9/11 One Year Later: How Have We Changed?" Speaker presentations will begin at 6:30 p.m. in room G1B30 of the Duane Physics building on the CU-Boulder campus, according to organizer and CU-Boulder religious studies Professor Ira Chernus. Admission is free.

The Cultural Events Board of the University of Colorado at Boulder's student government is hosting a lecture by Hanan Ashrawi, an internationally known speaker on the Palestinian cause, on Sept. 14 at 7 p.m. The talk will be in the University Memorial Center's Glenn Miller Ballroom. Doors will open at 6 p.m. Tickets for the talk will go on sale Tuesday, Sept. 10, at 10 a.m. at the Connection in the games area of the UMC. Ashrawi will speak on "Liberty and Justice Forgotten: United States and the Israeli Occupation of Palestine."

When asked how the Sept. 11 attacks affected the people charged with responding to disasters, University of Colorado at Boulder sociology Professor Dennis Mileti went to a shelf in his office and brought back a serious cartoon. The three characters in the cartoon are labeled "bioterrorism," "dirty bomb" and "natural hazards." The natural hazards character - representing events such as hurricanes, earthquakes and floods - is saying to the other two: "Welcome to the club."
