A 19-year-old male student at the University of Colorado at Boulder was diagnosed Friday morning with meningococcal meningitis. The student, who is a sophomore living off campus, is in stable condition at Boulder Community Foothills Hospital. University and Boulder County Public Health officials are investigating the single case and say that no other cases of the disease have been identified. State health authorities also have been notified.

Five candidates for the position of vice chancellor for research and dean of the graduate school have been announced by the University of Colorado at Boulder to fill the position currently held by Interim Vice Chancellor for Research Susan Avery. Avery is a candidate for the permanent position and a second internal candidate, engineering Professor Stein Sture, also is in the running for the post.

A panel discussion, "In a Strange Land: Becoming an International Journalist," will be held at the University of Colorado at Boulder on March 22 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Eaton Humanities Building room 1B80. The panel is sponsored by the School of Journalism and Mass Communication and will be moderated by Dean Paul S. Voakes. It is free and open to the public.

The University of Colorado at Boulder has launched a Renewable and Sustainable Energy Initiative to coordinate the university's already extensive campus resources devoted to energy coursework and research, mobilizing resources to underscore CU-Boulder's leadership in energy innovation.

University of Colorado at Boulder experts in the science, business and policy issues surrounding renewable and sustainable energy sources will gather for a town hall meeting and discussion March 21, the first public event of the university's new Renewable and Sustainable Energy Initiative.

The Leeds School of Business at the University of Colorado at Boulder has been named one of 10 "Hot Spots" for entrepreneurial education by Fortune Small Business magazine in its March issue. The magazine recognized the Leeds School as a "leader in 'green' entrepreneurship" and noted that its entrepreneurship program "specializes in helping students create companies that are eco-friendly and socially progressive." Fortune Small Business also said that "leaders of Boulder's organic and natural-products industry offer support."

Unusual spokes that appear fleetingly on the rings of Saturn only to disappear for years at a time may become visible again by July, according to a new study spearheaded by the University of Colorado at Boulder.

Fifteen students from the University of Colorado at Boulder will help repair a New Orleans shelter for victims of domestic violence as part of several alternative spring break volunteer projects during the week of March 27-31. Crescent House, a shelter for women and children that sustained wind and flood damage from Hurricane Katrina, will host the CU-Boulder students. The students will drive from Boulder to New Orleans March 24 and will arrive back in Boulder on April 2 just before classes resume.

A group of University of Colorado at Boulder researchers will share their experiences in the arctic, Greenland and Antarctic at a March 22 campus event in a prelude to the next International Polar Year, or IPY, in 2007.

Ronald Bernier will present his final public lecture at the University of Colorado at Boulder as a professor of art history when he discusses "Hidden Buddhist Arts in Burma, Ladakh and Tibet" on Monday, March 20. The free, public presentation will be held from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in Eaton Humanities Building room 250. A reception will be held following the lecture.
