A freshman student at the University of Colorado at Boulder was resting after surgery Monday afternoon to repair a neck wound following a random stabbing by a middle-aged man who stormed the terrace of the campus student union in Boulder this morning. The studentÂ’s family has consented to his identification. He is Michael George Knorps, 17, of Winnetka, Ill.

• The victim of the stabbing, Michael George Knorps, 17, is a freshman from Wannetka, Ill. He has undergone surgery at Boulder Community Hospital and is doing well. CU-Boulder Chancellor G.P. “Bud” Peterson has been in communication with Mr. Knorps’ family since late this morning.

MEDIA ADVISORY A news conference on today's stabbing incident at the University of Colorado at Boulder will be held in room 235 of the University Memorial Center beginning at 5 p.m. Participants will include representatives from the CU Police and campus administration. The University Memorial Center is located near the intersection of Broadway and Euclid Avenue on the CU-Boulder campus. The CU Police Department has reported that there was a stabbing incident at the University Memorial Center at approximately 9:45 a.m. today. The suspect has been taken into custody. The victim has been taken to the hospital and appears to be stable. CU officials have been in communication with the family of the student victim. The south side of the UMC has been secured, the suspect's car is being searched and the police are continuing their investigation.

University of Colorado at Boulder Professors Brian Argrow and Christopher Bowman have been appointed associate deans in the College of Engineering and Applied Science. Argrow will serve as associate dean for education, and Bowman as associate dean for research. The appointments, announced by engineering Dean Robert Davis, were effective Aug. 1. "I am delighted to have two of our top faculty, who excel in both research and teaching, bring their experience and vision to these leadership positions," Davis said.

As they return to campus or begin classes for the first time this fall, University of Colorado at Boulder students will be asked to sign up for a new wireless text-messaging service enabling the campus to notify them swiftly via mobile phone in case of a campus emergency. In the post-Virginia Tech environment, which heightened concern about campusesÂ’ emergency notification systems, a CU-Boulder Task Force decided that quick text messaging via mobile phone would be a valuable addition to current communication systems which link to students in the event of an emergency.

The University of Colorado at Boulder has identified 39 students who were enrolled in a summer class taught by a School of Education research associate who has tested positive for tuberculosis, CU-Boulder officials said today. The research associate is a Denver resident who has submitted to a voluntary home quarantine, according to Denver Health Medical Center officials who are working with Boulder Public Health and CU officials.
