Del Brinkman, director of journalism programs at the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, has accepted the position of dean of the University of Colorado at Boulder School of Journalism and Mass Communication. He will assume the position January 1, 2001 pending approval by the CU Board of Regents on June 29, according to CU-Boulder Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Phil DiStefano.

The Boulder Faculty Assembly at the University of Colorado at Boulder has announced the 11 recipients of its BFA Excellence Award for 1999-2000. Each spring, the $3,000 award is given for excellence in teaching, excellence in service and for excellence in research, scholarly and creative work. Up to four recipients are awarded annually in each of the three categories.

The Center for Environmental Journalism at the University of Colorado at Boulder has selected five journalists as the 2000-2001 Ted Scripps Fellows in Environmental Journalism, according to Len Ackland, the centerÂ’s director. Starting next fall the fellows will study environmental science, policy, law and journalism for two semesters at the university. They also will work on individual research projects.

Ofelia Miramontes, associate vice chancellor for diversity and equity at the University of Colorado at Boulder, was selected to receive a Latino Americans Who Make A Difference award for 2000 from the Urban Spectrum newspaper. Miramontes is also an associate professor of education. She was cited for her efforts in developing public education programs for second language learners of English. She was one of 11 recipients of this yearÂ’s award, which honors Latino Americans "who are dedicated to making a better world for everyone."

Three University of Colorado at Boulder students won first place in the print discipline at the One ClubÂ’s Young Creative Professionals advertising competition held in New York City. The CU-Boulder team of David Baker, Farrah Ferguson and Laura Hauseman competed against professional advertising agencies and graduate portfolio schools from around the country. The award is quite a coup, according to David Slayden, associate professor at the School of Journalism and Mass Communication and director of the Lab for New Media Strategy and Design, an Omnicom-funded project.

University of Colorado at Boulder alumnus Jim Voss is slated to make his fourth journey into the heavens on Friday, May 19, when NASA's space shuttle Atlantis blasts off from Cape Kennedy, Fla. Originally slated for launch April 16, the flight has been delayed three times. Carrying a seven-person crew, Atlantis is scheduled to dock with the International Space Station to unload a ton of cargo and perform maintenance on the orbiting habitat as its assembly continues, said NASA officials. Launch is slated for 4:12 a.m. MDT.

The CU-Boulder School of Law is the No. 1 state law school in the country and fourth overall for placing graduates in judicial clerkship positions. Out of the top 50 law schools listed in U.S. News & World ReportÂ’s "Best Graduate Schools, 2001 edition," CU-Boulder, with a 24 percent placement rate, trails only Yale (46.3 percent), Harvard (27.1 percent) and Stanford (24.2 percent). Judicial clerkships are a key educational quality indicator.

The Campus Safety, Health and Environmental Management Association announced that the University of Colorado at Boulder has been awarded the National Safety Council President's Citation Letter for its Complete Safety Program. The NSC's Complete Safety Program is intended to encourage and recognize outstanding efforts in designing and implementing safety programs and incorporating novel ideas in compliance with standardized regulations at the university level.

Chancellor Richard Byyny has appointed Ronald J. Stump to the position of vice chancellor for student affairs at the University of Colorado at Boulder. He will assume the position June 12, pending approval by the CU Board of Regents on June 9. Stump has held the position on an interim basis for the past year and was one of four finalists to interview with campus constituents last month. He also served as associate vice chancellor and dean of students at CU-Boulder for three years prior to his interim appointment. The proposed salary will be $130,000.
