The IMAX film crew that documented life and death on Mount Everest relied on the expertise of CU-Boulder geology Professor Roger Bilhan over an 18-month period to help them get the science right. “Everest,” which premieres March 13 at the IMAX Theater in the Denver Museum of Natural History, was filmed by a crew led by David Breashears of Boulder.

Daniel Vigil, associate dean of the University of Colorado at Boulder School of Law, has been elected chairman of the board of directors of the Legal Aid Society of Metropolitan Denver. The non-profit corporation was founded in 1925 to provide free legal representation in civil matters to low-income residents in the Denver metropolitan area. Since the early 1980s, the organization also has served clients in 11 rural mountain counties in northwestern Colorado.

The University of Colorado and Colorado State University have teamed up with two Colorado high schools to create a statewide model for learning Japanese. The Modern Language Association awarded a grant of nearly $6,000 to the universities to work with Eaglecrest High School in Aurora and Boulder High School over the next two years. It was one of eight such awards made nationally.

Navajo star and constellation myths, including the Navajo story of how the stars were created, will be the subject of the next live astronomy presentation or “star talk” at Fiske Planetarium on the campus of the University of Colorado at Boulder. “Navajo Skies” will be presented by CU astronomer John Stocke at 7:30 p.m., Friday, March 6, and repeated at 7 p.m., Wednesday, March 11.

The International WomenÂ’s Alliance at CU-Boulder is hosting three workshops a day, March 3 through March 6, during International WomenÂ’s Week, which began Sunday with a keynote speech by Winona LaDuke, an internationally acclaimed Native American and environmental activist. The workshops are scheduled from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in conference rooms 158 and 159, located in the University Memorial Center.

Longtime Boulder residents David and Frances Hawkins have been named the second recipients of the George Gamow Memorial Lecture Award at the University of Colorado at Boulder. The award honors the CU-Boulder scientists who have "made the most significant contribution to the public's understanding of science." The Hawkins received the award at the 33rd George Gamow Memorial Lecture on March 3.

Political activist Angela Davis will give the keynote address titled "Unfinished Liberation: Beyond the Prison Industrial Complex" at a three-day conference on race and gender issues March 13-15 at the University of Colorado at Boulder.

An update on the state of affirmative action and some implications for the University of Colorado at Boulder will be presented March 13 at the third annual ChancellorÂ’s Diversity Summit, "Beyond the Choir." Activities will run from 8:40 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Dal Ward Athletic Center and are open to all CU-Boulder students, faculty and staff.

From the Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs to National Jewish hospital in Denver, several Colorado institutions can trace their history back to the early treatment of tuberculosis. Dr. Charles Scoggin, a former University of Colorado professor and founder of the Boulder pharmaceutical company Somatogen, will discuss ColoradoÂ’s legacy as a tuberculosis treatment center in a program sponsored by CU-Boulder's Center of the American West.

Leaders of Central America's most prominent businesses will attend a series of seminars in Costa Rica March 9 to March 13, including one on hiring presented by CU-Boulder management professor Joe Rosse. A columnist for the Boulder County Business Report, Rosse is senior associate for the Center for Human Function and Work, and co-author of High-Impact Hiring. He was invited to Costa Rica by INCAE, Latin America's leading business school and executive management program.
