Jean Delaney, director of international education at the University of Colorado at Boulder, has received the 1998 Homer Higbee Award, one of the two highest honors given by NAFSA: Association of International Educators.

Many science teachers will be rushing back to class this summer to learn more about bugs and genetics through a variety of workshops sponsored by the Hughes Initiative Program at CU-Boulder.

Elizabeth A. Guertin has been named the director of academic advising and assistant dean for the College of Arts and Sciences at CU-Boulder, pending approval by the Board of Regents. Guertin was serving as director of the University Academic Advising Center and the University Studies Program at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. She will begin her position at CU in mid-June. Guertin will succeed Doris Downey who has been the interim director of academic advising as well as assistant dean in the College of Arts and Sciences.

Dispelling the myth that minorities don't care about protecting the environment is one goal of a Denver conference addressing issues of the environment and race. The Sept. 11-12 conference, sponsored by the Center of the American West at the University of Colorado at Boulder, is expected to attract a sizable audience from many ethnic backgrounds to discuss a broad range of natural resource issues. The keynote speaker will be Robert Stanton, director of the National Park Service and the first African American to hold that position in the agency's 82-year history.

The University of Colorado School of Law has made Professor Arthur H. Travers Jr. the first recipient of the Clifford J. Calhoun Public Service Award. The $500 award recognizes outstanding contributions made to the law school, the university, and the legal community "which exemplify the spirit and tradition of Professor Calhoun's altruistic career with the School of Law." The award is funded by an endowment from an anonymous donor.

Fourteen eager CU-Boulder faculty and staff members jumped on a bus and headed to locations around Colorado for the first Colorado Traveling Seminar. Their goal for the May 18-22 trip was to learn more about the state and meet the people the university serves.

Two University of Colorado at Boulder doctoral students in the College of Engineering and Applied Science have been awarded 1998-99 IBM Cooperative Fellowships. The fellowships provide the students with a tuition reimbursement, a stipend and the opportunity to gain research and development experience working with industrial scientists at IBM.

A University of Colorado at Boulder researcher helped National Geographic magazine create a map of natural hazards in North America scheduled to appear in the July issue. Mary Fran Myers, co-director of the Natural Hazards Research and Applications Information Center, coordinated the data on wildfires from the United States, Canada and Mexico.

The University of Colorado at Boulder's College of Engineering and Applied Science will begin offering a bachelorÂ’s degree in environmental engineering this fall in response to the high interest expressed by current and prospective students.
