The CU Friends of the Libraries will host "Just Desserts," an evening of mystery with desserts and beverages on Friday, May 7, at 7:30 p.m. at the University of Colorado at Boulder. The event is free and open to the public and will be held in the Fleming Law building. Two nationally acclaimed authors will discuss contemporary American Indian culture and mystical ancient lore in literature. The mystery writers incorporate authentic aspects of American Indian culture in their writing and will discuss their latest books.

The numerous achievements and contributions of retiring University of Colorado at Boulder Professor Jane Bock will be recognized in a ceremony titled "Jane Bock: 30 Years of Service to CU and the West" on Wednesday, May 12. The ceremony will be held at 7 p.m. in Old Main Chapel and is free and open to the public. The department of environmental, population and organismic biology and the Center of the American West are co-sponsoring the event.

Western Slope reaction to the CU Real Estate CenterÂ’s evaluation of Grand JunctionÂ’s growth issues has been positive, said Byron Koste, director of the center. "Our public/private panel was able to dissect problems and come up with tangible, measurable goals for the city," Koste said.

In addition to the CU-Boulder commencement ceremony at Folsom Stadium on May 14 at 9:30 a.m., graduates and their friends and families are invited to attend special recognition ceremonies organized by individual schools and colleges. The following is a schedule of special events to be held by the schoolsand colleges:

Stephanie L. Cuthbertson, a senior at Northglenn High School, has been selected to receive the Luther and Helene Denzler Monberg Memorial Achievement Scholarship at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Cuthbertson will receive a $1,608 scholarship for her freshman year at CU-Boulder. She has a 3.95 grade-point average and plans to major in journalism. The scholarship, provided by a CU alumna and native of Leadville, is intended to provide financial help to deserving students who are active in their communities.

Michael Kunz will be far along his career track of understanding how non-native grasses succeed when he graduates from the University of Colorado at Boulder this spring, leaving the campus with not one, but two degrees he earned simultaneously.

Applicants are being sought for a new residential program starting in fall 1999 for University of Colorado at Boulder freshmen who are interested in leadership. The Chancellor's Leadership Residential Program will consist of 50 to 75 incoming freshmen who will live together on designated floors in a Williams Village residence hall. The program will be directed by Richard Kraft, an award-winning education professor and former vice chairman of the Colorado State Board of Education.

Two faculty members from the University of Colorado at Boulder were elected to the National Academy of Sciences this week, bringing the total number of CU-Boulder professors to 17 who have been named to the elite institution. Richard McIntosh, a professor in CU-BoulderÂ’s molecular, cellular and developmental biology department, and Charles DePuy, an emeritus professor in CU-BoulderÂ’s chemistry and biochemistry department, were among the 60 members nationwide elected in 1999.

The University of Colorado at Boulder, in partnership with Storage Technology Corp., will host the 1999 Latino Student Unity/Leadership Conference Thursday, May 6, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the University Memorial Center. More than 300 Latino/Chicano high school students from the Boulder Valley School District are expected to attend. The students engage in a variety of workshops and presentations on Latino/Chicano literature and history, film studies and higher education opportunities.

The 69th annual Alumni Awards ceremony will honor 10 people for their service to the University of Colorado and their communities in Old Main Chapel at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 11. The George Norlin Award, honoring distinguished alumni for lifetime achievement and devotion to the betterment of society, goes to Mary Ann Casey, a 1970 International Relations graduate, former ambassador to Algeria and Tunisia, and CU-Boulder's current diplomat in residence.
