A search committee has been named to seek a director of diversity for the College of Business at the University of Colorado at Boulder. The new position will address the College of Business's commitment to diversity issues. James Marlatt, senior instructor of information systems, is serving as interim director.

Dr. Eric Kandel, winner of the 2000 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine, will lecture on "The Past, the Future and the Biology of Memory Storage" at the University of Colorado at Boulder on Wednesday, April 11. The 8 p.m. talk in Macky Auditorium is free and open to the public. The 36th George Gamow Memorial Lecture is intended for a general audience of non-scientists.

A ranking of business programs in the Academy of Management Journal rated CU-Boulder's College of Business faculty 38th in the nation. The study evaluated faculty research productivity in the premier academic journals.

Newly discovered evidence of planets orbiting other stars, and future strategies in the quest for extra-solar planets will be examined during "Is Life Common in the Universe," a live show at the University of Colorado at Boulder's Fiske Planetarium on Friday, April 6, and Tuesday, April 10, at 7:30 p.m. Astrophysical and planetary sciences Professor John Bally will show the planetarium audience recent observations of newly-forming stars and the planetary systems that are developing around them.

The College of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of Colorado at Boulder is accepting applications for the 34th annual High School Honors Institute and a new opportunity with the Royal Academy of Engineering's "Headstart" program at the University of Southampton, England.

Middle and junior high schools are invited to apply for three free years of training, technical assistance and materials to implement an exemplary program, Life Skills Training, which has been proven to reduce drug abuse and prevent violence. The program will be funded at 35 sites nationwide by a $4 million federal grant received by CU-Boulder's Center for the Study and Prevention of Violence. The funding is provided by the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, a division of the U.S. Department of Justice.

Dr. Helen Caldicott, a world-renowned activist recognized for her opposition to the threat of global warfare, will speak at the University of Colorado at Boulder on April 5 on "The Ever Present Threat of Nuclear War." A pediatrician, Caldicott is speaking as part of the Gustavson Memorial Distinguished Lecture Series, established in honor of former professor, dean and acting CU President Reuben G. Gustavson. The event is sponsored by CU-Boulder and the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences, or CIRES.

The University of Colorado Cultural Events Board will present author and filmmaker Michael Moore on Tuesday, April 3, at 7 p.m. in Boulder's Flatirons Theatre. Moore, the creator of "Roger and Me," "The Awful Truth" and "TV Nation," will speak on "Corporations and Multinationalism in the Third World."

High school juniors with diverse backgrounds are invited to apply for a free business leadership program being hosted this summer by the CU-Boulder College of Business. Applications will be accepted through April 13. Â鶹ÒùÔº will spend the week of June 17-23 on the Boulder campus learning about business and working on an advertising campaign for corporate sponsors. Â鶹ÒùÔº also will gain new computer skills and get a chance to network with business professionals.

The sounds of music -- how they are created and the rules of physics they follow -- will be the subject of the March 31 CU Wizards show for children to be held at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Physicist Jim Faller will use a group of both homemade and real instruments to demonstrate various aspects of "The Physics of Music." The homemade instruments are constructed from a wide range of materials including bamboo, garden hose, plastic pipe, redwood, funnels and doorknobs.
