On Monday, Nov. 28, the monthly Ethics and Compliance Brown Bag will feature a presentation by Kristi Wold-McCormick and Susan Dorsey, both from the Office of the Registrar, on the subject of student data privacy.
Many members of the campus community possess a basic understanding of laws such as the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA), yet the depth of responsibilities and how CU works to protect students extends beyond FERPA.
The presentation will provide attendees with a greater understanding of employee roles and responsibilities related to student data privacy, current initiatives related to FERPA and ethical issues on topics such as systems use and preferred name and gender identity. Case studies and group conversation will allow participants听to learn more about why this topic is so important, how we focus on it at CU Boulder and the individual role each听can play to ensure student听data is secure.
During the hour session, ample time will be provided for audience Q&A. A University Counsel staff member will be present to answer questions related to legal aspects of听this topic. Questions can also be submitted in advance by emailing dorsey@colorado.edu.
Attendees are encouraged to arrive early to participate in networking with other attendees and are welcome to bring their lunch. Light refreshments will be provided.听
