Bobby Schnabel, vice provost for academic and campus technology at the University of Colorado at Boulder, has been named the next editor-in-chief of SIAM Review, the flagship journal of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics.
SIAM's membership is made up of applied and computational mathematicians, computer scientists, engineers, statisticians and mathematical educators.
The organization brings together researchers and practitioners who perform mathematical analysis and computer simulations in areas ranging from aircraft design to cell structure analysis and the management of financial markets.
"I'm honored to be selected to edit a publication that's home to some of the most influential papers in applied mathematics and computational science," said Schnabel. "SIAM Review has had a stellar record, currently holding the highest impact factor among all applied mathematics journals, and I hope to be able to perpetuate its high standards."
Schnabel was the founding editor of the Education section of Siam Review and now becomes the second editor-in-chief under the revised format. Recent issues have included articles covering applications of mathematics and computation to topics as diverse as human biomechanics, image reconstruction, public-key cryptography, web searching, cancer classification and the separation of coconuts.
Schnabel also is the founding director of the ATLAS Institute (Alliance for Technology, Learning and Society) on the Boulder campus. He has been a faculty member in the department of computer science at CU-Boulder since 1977 and was chair of the department from 1990-1995. He was associate dean for academic affairs in the College of Engineering and Applied Science from 1995-1997. His teaching and research interests are in the areas of scientific and parallel computation, including applications to molecular chemistry problems, and he has authored more than 100 technical papers.
Schnabel is the recipient of the 1980 Teaching Recognition Award, awarded by students, the 1987 Boulder Faculty Teaching Award, awarded by faculty, and a 1998 University of Colorado Boulder Faculty Service Award.
