Editors: A complete schedule of Assistant Attorney General Deborah Daniels' visit to Colorado on Oct. 20 appears below.
A high-ranking U.S. Department of Justice official will visit Colorado on Oct. 20 to observe violence prevention programs recommended by the Center for the Study and Prevention of Violence at the University of Colorado at Boulder.
Assistant Attorney General Deborah Daniels will visit programs based in Littleton and Longmont throughout the day.
The programs are part of the Blueprints for Violence Prevention series the CU-Boulder center recommends as meeting the highest scientific standards for preventing or reducing levels of violence. More than 600 violence prevention programs were reviewed before 11 were selected as Blueprints.
Daniels, a former U.S. attorney for the southern district of Indiana, is responsible for the overall management and oversight of the Justice Department's Office of Justice Programs, located in Washington, D.C.
She is visiting Colorado to see how communities have been able to adopt effective violence prevention programs with little or no federal funding, said sociology Professor Delbert Elliott, director of the CU-Boulder center. Handbooks detailing each program in the Blueprints for Violence Prevention series are available at low cost to any interested person.
CU-Boulder's Elliott was the senior scientific editor for the U.S. Surgeon General's Report to the Nation on Youth Violence released in 2001. He has taught at CU-Boulder since 1967 and is a fellow and former president of the American Society of Criminology. He is the senior author of several books on juvenile delinquency, drugs and mental health including "Explaining Delinquency and Drug Use," "Violence in American Schools" and the forthcoming "Good Kids From Bad Neighborhoods."
Summaries of each of the Blueprints programs and brief video clips are posted on the Internet at . The CU-Boulder Center for the Study and Prevention of Violence is part of CU-Boulder's Institute of Behavioral Science and can be reached at (303) 492-1032.
