Friends and colleagues of Quigg Newton will gather on the University of Colorado at Boulder campus Friday, May 30, to remember the life of the former CU president and mayor of Denver who died April 4.
Current CU President Elizabeth Hoffman, CU-Boulder Chancellor Richard Bynny and former CU Health Sciences Center Chancellor Dr. Bernard Nelson will be among the speakers at an 11 a.m. public memorial in the Old Main Chapel. A reception at the Koenig Alumni Center will follow. Parking is available in the Euclid Avenue Autopark.
Newton earned a law degree from Yale in 1936 before serving as Denver's mayor from 1947 to 1955. From 1956 to 1963 he was CU's eighth president, playing a key role in the early development of the university's acclaimed physics, chemistry and space sciences programs. Newton took pride in the university's interdisciplinary institutes and was a strong proponent of increasing CU's emphasis on international education. He was 91 when he died.
Other speakers at Newton's memorial will include Bruce Rockwell, who worked for Newton during his time as Denver mayor, and attorney Don Hoaglund, Newton's colleague at the law firm Davis Graham & Stubbs.
