The CU-Boulder Friends of the Libraries will present a talk by local mystery writer Stephanie Kane at the 11th annual Just Desserts event on Friday, May 16.
The event will begin at 7 p.m. in the Fleming Law Building on the CU-Boulder campus. It is free and open to the public. A dessert reception will precede the program.
Kane will discuss her two mystery novels, "Blind Spot" and "Quiet Time." Her third thriller, "Extreme Indifference," will be published by Scribner in the fall. A native of Brooklyn, N.Y., Kane graduated from CU in 1974 and then ran a karate studio in Boulder. She holds a second degree black belt. She graduated from the CU School of Law in 1989 and joined a Denver law firm.
After climbing to the summit of Mount Ararat in Turkey in 1990, Kane returned to Denver and changed her specialty from corporate law to criminal defense work. She has made several trips to eastern Europe to lecture on money laundering and white collar crime.
"Blind Spot," Kane's first published novel, features Jackie Flowers, a female criminal defense attorney who is a closet dyslexic. Disability groups and the International Dyslexic Association have embraced Kane's work. The National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers has rated "Blind Spot" a "must read."
Kane has created a questionnaire on her Web site to research the relationship between disability and creativity. She says the responses have provided a wealth of material for sequels, the first of which is the upcoming "Extreme Indifference," set in Boulder.
Kane's second novel, "Quiet Time," is a psychological suspense story dealing with the murder of a woman in her own garage a week before the wedding of her college-age son. The plot describes the justice system from the perspective of the victim's family when the system fails and the killer goes free.
Free parking for the Just Desserts event will be available in lot 402 south of the Fleming Law Building. The site can be reached by taking Broadway to Regent Drive and turning south on Kittredge Loop Road.
Just Desserts is sponsored by the Daily Camera.
