The Chancellor's Committee on Women at the University of Colorado at Boulder will present its annual Status of Women Report on Oct. 31 at 2 p.m. in Old Main Chapel.
Chancellor Richard L. Byyny will address some of the key issues contained in the report. He and committee members will take questions, comments and suggestions from the audience afterward.
The public is invited to attend the address and the reception in the Heritage Center in Old Main immediately following.
"The Chancellor's Committee on Women would like to commend the university for the significant achievements it has made in regard to women's issues on the Boulder campus," said Claudia Van Gerven, co-chair of the committee and an Honors instructor.
"We want to emphasize, however, that much work still needs to be done to create a culture that fosters equity and safety for all women at CU," Van Gerven said. "We believe the first step to improve the status of all women at CU-Boulder would be for campus leaders to develop a strategic action plan that would coherently address the recommendations of the 2002 Status of Women Report."
The committee's recommendations include improving policies and procedures to ensure the safety of women students, examining proper classification of staff with respect to job duties, and implementing exit interviews and mandatory diversity training.
Additional recommendations include the development and implementation of procedures to evaluate and ensure equitable classroom climates, administrative leave for managerial training, a systemic staff mentoring program and the development of a tracking system to quantify recruitment and retention of women and minorities.
Statistics from three previous years provide a quantitative picture of the status of women at CU-Boulder, particularly on the percentage of women faculty, the overall representation of women employees and the distribution of women across broad job categories in 2001.

The Chancellor's Committee on Women, established in April 1996, is a representative group of faculty, staff and students that monitors the status of women on campus and recommends policy changes to address equity issues.
The committee has stimulated and encouraged a number of significant changes at CU-Boulder in the past five years, including enhanced data collection and reporting on the status of women, an increase in campus-wide diversity efforts, a new emphasis on continuous monitoring, feedback and revision of the campus's sexual harassment policy and the initiation of safety and health programs for women on campus.
More than a dozen priorities identified in previous reports have been fully or partially implemented by the chancellor.Ìý
