"Medieval Treasures: Books and Manuscripts from the 9th to the 15th Centuries" is now on display in the Norlin Library Special Collections department at the University of Colorado at Boulder.
The exhibit features classical and popular works in addition to medieval service books. Other highlights include two complete 13th century Parisian Bibles, examples of fragments and decorated borders, an English private letter and the work of two 15th century Florentine scribes.
An accompanying exhibit, "Ploughing the Parchment: European Manuscripts from the Middle Ages, 500-1500," explains how medieval manuscripts were made.
The Rare Book Associates will host an opening reception for the exhibit from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, July 21, in the Center for British Studies on Norlin Library's fifth floor. Visiting British scholars A.S.G. Edwards and Julia Boffey will give a short talk on the manuscripts.
A reception and an opportunity to view the exhibit will follow the talk. The event is free and open to the public. Free parking will be available in lot 380, just north of Norlin Library.
With nearly 200 medieval manuscripts, the CU-Boulder Special Collections department houses one of the largest collections in the West.
The Special Collections department is open Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m. to noon and 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. The department is closed Monday, Tuesday, Saturday and Sunday.
