Matt Brown, a doctoral candidate in sociology, has been named recipient of the first annual $1,000 scholarship sponsored by the University of Colorado at Boulder's Lesbian, Bisexual, Gay and Transgender Alumni Association.

Brown represented graduate students for three years on the CU-Boulder Chancellor's Standing Committee on Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Issues. He also serves on the GLBT Studies Certificate Program advisory committee. His commitment to the CU gay community also involves facilitating workshops for Sexual Health and Peer Educators, where he deals with contemporary issues in safe sex education, and COURAGE, CU's rape and gender education program.

As a generous volunteer, Brown has contributed to the GLBT community and other marginalized populations in Boulder. His service in the community includes stellar contributions to the Boulder County AIDS Project and OASOS (Open and Affirming Sexual Orientation Support).

As an instructor in the sociology department, Brown teaches an undergraduate sexuality course for both the sociology and women's studies departments. He has won awards for his service from both BCAP and the sociology department, where he received the Outstanding Contribution Award from the department's diversity committee.

Brown came to CU-Boulder in 1996 after earning a bachelor's degree in sociology and psychology at Miami University and a master's in sociology at the University of Cincinnati. He expects to receive his doctoral degree next December.

The Lesbian, Bisexual, Gay and Transgender Alumni Association is a social and activist group organized to keep lesbian, bisexual and gay alumni involved with the University of Colorado at Boulder. Activities include providing information, services, financial support and gatherings to foster the camaraderie of LBGT alumni, faculty, staff and students; encouraging understanding of lesbian and gay issues; improving the educational and campus climate; and furthering overall diversity at CU-Boulder.
