The third annual Dorothy Martin Faculty Awards and Doctoral Student Scholarships for spring 2001 have been awarded to three members of the University of Colorado at Boulder community.
The awards honor women who exemplify the ideals of Professor Emeritus Dorothy Martin, who was a faculty member in the CU-Boulder psychology department for 46 years and who was instrumental in establishing the first CU Women's Center in 1964.
This year's recipients are M. Lee Potts, an associate professor in the theatre and dance department, and Donna Goldstein, an assistant professor in the anthropology department, each of whom received $1,000, and Susan Erikson, a doctoral candidate in the anthropology department, who received $1,500.
The women were selected on the basis of their awareness and activism concerning women's issues, academic excellence and openness to life and a true diversity of interests.
Potts has been on the CU-Boulder faculty for 31 years and is retiring this spring after an active career directing productions, mentoring students and teaching classes.
Goldstein spent more than two and a half years researching the effects of AIDS on Brazilian women, which led her to create new educational materials specifically for Brazilian women that are geared toward their culture and needs, unlike previous materials.
Erikson has spent the past three years researching parental diagnostic technologies in Germany, including a year spent in hospitals in the former East Germany and West Germany.
