A collection of 36 posters celebrating women scientists will be the focus of a public reception at Fiske Planetarium on Thursday, Feb. 8, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
The poster collection is the work of Pamela Davis Kivelson from the UCLA Science and Art Center, part of the university's physics department.
"This reception is really a celebration of the strong presence of women in the sciences at CU-Boulder, as well as the arrival of this wonderful collection," said astrophysical and planetary sciences Professor Fran Bagenal.
Kivelson has described the project's goal as changing "the intellectual and emotional climate surrounding the idea of scientific research in order to pursue careers related to the physical sciences and mathematics, and to retain, at the high school and university level and beyond, women who have already chosen such careers."
The posters, which match concepts to women scientists, will be on public display Feb. 5-8 at Fiske, and then will be housed in several departments across campus. The posters can be viewed on the Web at the following site: .
Funding for the poster project was provided by the National Science Foundation, the Sloan Foundation and Allied Signal. The reception at Fiske is sponsored by IBM.
Fiske Planetarium is located on the CU-Boulder campus at Regent Drive and Kittredge Loop Drive.
