More than 5,000 parents and families of CU-Boulder students are expected to attend the annual Fall Parents Weekend to be held Oct. 27-29 on the CU-Boulder campus. The event draws parents from around the United States and from several foreign countries.
For the first time parents and families are able to register online over the Internet, which will account for approximately half of all registrations this year, according to Leasa Weimer, director of parent relations.
The family weekend begins early on Friday, Oct. 27, and continues until Sunday afternoon. Registration for the weekend events will begin at the Recreation Center from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Friday and again from 8:30 a.m. until game time at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday.
Parents and families will be given the opportunity to enjoy a wide variety of events, from a tour of the Dal Ward athletic complex to a discussion on career planning.
Two new presentations focusing on student life at CU will be presented this year, she said. "What Advising Can Do For Your Student," will explain how academic advising works at CU and how it can help students succeed. It will attempt to answer any questions that parents have about academic advising.
The other program, "Finding Off-Campus Housing," will provide information on services available to students who wish to live off campus and will address the issue of housing in Boulder.
For those interested in a sport-filled weekend, conditioning classes will be offered at the Rec Center, the Big 12 Cross-Country Championships will be at the Buffalo Ranch on the CU-Boulder South Campus and CU will play Oklahoma State at Folsom Stadium. The Heart and Sole 5K Run/Walk also will be held on Sunday and will benefit the American Heart Association.
This year the Boulder Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring and hosting a tour of Boulder. The tour will include Celestial Seasonings, the Leanin聮 Tree Museum of Western Art, the Dunshanbe Teahouse and the Pearl Street Mall. Because of limited seating,the tour is already filled.
Parents Weekend is a mutually beneficial event for both students and parents, Weimer said. It gives parents the opportunity to see how well their sons or daughters have adjusted to campus life and also allows students to spend time with their parents and introduce them to their new community and surroundings, she added.
