"Portrait: Glenn Miller," a program centered on the life of the famous bandleader, will be presented on Thursday, Oct. 12, by the University of Colorado Friends of the Libraries.
The program begins at 7:30 p.m. in the chapel at The Academy, 970 Aurora Ave. in Boulder. The program is free and open to the public.
Speaking will be Alan Cass, curator of the Glenn Miller Archives at CU-Boulder, and Paul Tanner, a trombonist with the original Glenn Miller civilian orchestra. Cass will present a multimedia collection of pictures, words and music of the life of Glenn Miller and Tanner will lecture on jazz and the big band era.
Cass was awarded an honorary doctorate from CU-Boulder, his alma mater, for his work with the archives and for his service to the university as director of the Coors Events/Conference Center, assistant athletic director and assistant to the director of the University Memorial Center.
Tanner ended his 23-year teaching career at the University of California at Los Angeles by earning the status of "distinguished professor" at the school. His resume includes performing in all major television, movie and recording studios in Los Angeles and playing with Les Brown, Henry Mancini, Nelson Riddle, Eugene Ormandy, Arturo Toscanini, Leonard Bernstein and Andre Previn.
The program is part of the CU Friends of the Libraries聮 Treasures Series and is intended to familiarize the community with the "treasures" accessible to the public at CU-Boulder.
Attendees are asked to park on The Academy side of the four streets that surround The Academy property: 10th, Lincoln, Aurora and Cascade. The Academy entrance is through its driveway on 10th Street.
