Lighting improvements are providing safer passage for CU-Boulder students and other residents and visitors on University Hill.
The Public Service Co. of Colorado last month upgraded 36 streetlights from 70 watts to 150 watts and installed new lights on 16 existing poles. The improvements were made in areas extending from Broadway to Ninth Street and from University to Euclid Avenue.
According to Mike Mansfield, university-city liaison and program coordinator, the lighting upgrades are a good example of cooperation between the city and the university on mutual goals.
"This project is another step in efforts to provide a better feeling of safety and to strengthen the ability of people to live and commute in the area and be safe," Mansfield said. "Changes like this highlight the university's and the city聮s commitment to providing a safe living environment for students living off campus."
The university also made lighting improvements and installed additional emergency call boxes along core campus pedestrian routes to improve safety and security on the main campus, East Campus, Williams Village and in the two autoparks.
A lighting project is currently being completed along the east edge of the residence halls on the main campus.
More lighting upgrades will be made on University Hill during the summer. The project is funded by the Transportation Division for the City of Boulder and is supported by City Manager Ron Secrist and Ron Stump, CU-Boulder聮s interim vice chancellor for student affairs.
