Academics, activists and community leaders will present works covering various aspects of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered studies and culture at the eighth annual "Lambda Rising: A Queer Studies Conference" on April 8 at the University of Colorado at Boulder.
The Saturday conference will feature panelists discussing GLBT issues, including "Are College Campuses Safe for GLBT Â鶹ÒùÔº?" and "Ten Thousand Voices of Gender: A Critical Look at Alternative Gendered Voices from the Last 100 Years."
A highlight of the conference will be a keynote address by Dr. David Román, professor at the University of Southern California. Román will present a "Not-About-AIDS-Talk," which looks at the relationship between AIDS and gay culture by examining the work of artists living with HIV.
The talk also features nationally renowned dancers Bill T. Jones and Neil Greenberg. Román will show clips of their recent dance works, as well as slides that help position the larger discussion of AIDS and highlight the diversity of GLBT culture.
The conference will begin at 8:30 a.m. with a continental breakfast and end at 3 p.m. after the keynote address. A buffet lunch will be provided. The conference is free to those who register on or before April 5. People registering at the door will be charged $20. Registration includes continental breakfast, lunch and program sessions.
There will be a musical performance that evening at 8 p.m. in the Old Main Chapel on the CU-Boulder Campus. Vox Femina's "Garlic GRRRLZ Reek Revenge! Justice in Our Magic Box" will benefit the GLBT Resource Center. Tickets range from $10 to $15.
The conference is sponsored by the GLBT Resource Center. Ian K. Macgillivray, doctoral student at CU-Boulder and academic associate of the center, is the conference director.
The center provides information and referral services, educational, cultural and social programming and advocacy for the GLBT communities on the CU-Boulder campus. It also provides networking opportunities for GLBT groups on and off campus.
