The CU-Boulder Law School Library will add two rare books to its collection in honor of Professors J. Dennis Hynes and Norton L. Steuben to commemorate their appointments as Nicholas Rosenbaum Professors of Law.
A ceremony will be held today, Oct. 6, in the Lindsley Memorial Courtroom of the Fleming Law Building at 4 p.m., followed by a reception in the Moorhead-Rutledge Lounge.
The appointments were made possible by a 1979 gift from the estate of Nicholas Rosenbaum. The endowment is used "to augment the salary of regular teaching positions to attract and retain outstanding legal scholars."
In honor of Professor J. Dennis Hynes, the Law Library will purchase a copy of William W. StoryÂ’s "A Treatise on the Law of Contracts Not Under Seal."
The book, first published in 1844, is considered one of the standard works on contract law and was the primary resource during its time. Hynes graduated from CU-Boulder in 1958 and from the School of Law two years later. He has been at CU-Boulder since 1964 and has directed the Law SchoolÂ’s legal writing program for 12 years.
A specialist in the law of agency, partnership and the limited liability company, Hynes chose StoryÂ’s book "because of its significance as the first American treatise on the law of contracts."
For Professor Steuben, the Law Library will purchase a first edition of Boris I. BittkerÂ’s "Federal Income Taxation of Corporations and Shareholders." Many consider it the best book available on tax law. Steuben chose the Bittker book for its great reputation and because of the influence it has had on him.
Steuben received his J.D. with distinction from the University of Michigan in 1961. He became a full professor at CU-Boulder in 1974 and specializes in taxation and real estate. He has won numerous awards both for his teaching and for his service to the community.
