Wendy A. Larson, professor of modern Chinese literature and comparative literature at the University of Oregon, will give a talk on "Rewriting the Red: Sexualizing the Cultural Revolution in Post-Mao China" from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Friday, April 30, in the University Memorial Center, room 235.
In post-Mao China the discourse of desire -- or sexual themes and images in poetry, fiction and art film -- is an increasingly common way for intellectuals to rewrite the past. Larson's presentation will focus on representations of fiction and film that are redefining the Cultural Revolution experience and how those representations are presenting a vision of passion that is generally not recognized in official discourse in China.
The lecture is part of the Chinese writer/artist and critic series sponsored by the President's Fund for the Humanities, the department of East Asian languages and civilizations, the Center for Asian Studies and the Center for the Humanities and the Arts.
